With the name lucky bamboo, or bamboo of fortune, are indicated the branches of dracaena sanderiana, an evergreen shrub native to tropical Africa. It has thin erect stems, of a bright green color, reminiscent of bamboo stems; at the apex of the branches, large tufts of fairly rigid and leathery leaves develop, with a green color, sometimes variegated. Plants grown in the soil generally develop some lateral branches, each of which bears one or more tufts of leaves. Once a portion of the dracaena branch is cut, it tends to develop roots and foliage. On the market it is possible to find branches of dracaena of various lengths, from 15 to 90 cm, sometimes grown so that they develop a spiral pattern, obtained by placing the branches horizontally, and turning them periodically. It is possible to cultivate the branches of lucky bamboo directly in the water, thin giving them a support consisting of sand or gravel, or you can put them in pots with soil. Generally in water they tend to develop less than in soil cultivation.
Crop requirements
The species of dracaena sanderiana they are grown in a bright place, but not exposed to direct sunlight, which can also seriously damage them; they develop without problems even in shady or fairly dark places. They fear the cold and the minimum temperature should always be above 12 ° C. Avoid exposing these plants to air blows or sudden temperature changes.
As for the soil, use a good, soft and not too rich soil; to avoid harmful water stagnation it mixes with the cultivated substrate of washed river sand, which allows a greater drainage.
Watering
Branches without a root system, or with few roots, can be cultivated in water, remembering to change the water every week; it is advisable to use rainwater or mineral water, since the dragon trees fear the chlorine salts often present in the water of the aqueduct. Plants grown in pots need fairly regular watering, waiting for the soil to dry between one watering and another. They can easily withstand short periods of drought. During the warm season, or when domestic heating is on, it is advisable to vaporize the leaves frequently. For plants cultivated in the soil it is advisable to add fertilizer for green plants, every 30-40 days, to the irrigating water. As for the branches in water, we can supply mineral salts by mixing a very small dose of fertilizer directly into the water, being careful not to exceed, generally about a tenth part of the recommended quantity may be sufficient.
Multiplication
The multiplication of Dracaena sanderiana occurs by cuttings, even small portions of stem tend to root easily, it is advisable to cover the upper part of the cuttings with pruning wax.
