Azalea is a collective name for ornamental plants of the genus Rhododendron of the Heather family. There are evergreen and deciduous plants.

They range in height from 50 - 60 cm to 3 m. They are cultivated because of their beautiful flowers. Distinguish between garden and indoor types.

In this article, you can read the rules for proper care of this beautiful plant.

Features of caring for rhododendron at home

Consider how to care for a flower that was presented in a pot. Home care for indoor rhododendron species, in addition to all basic rules, includes the following:

  1. Ice shower (excluding flowering period). In this case, the soil is covered with a film to avoid waterlogging.
  2. In hot weather, snow or pieces of ice from the freezer are placed on the surface of the earth in a flowerpot.

The conditions for growing azaleas are described here.

At different times of the year

In the warm season, actions are aimed at preventing plants from drying out (see watering and spraying) and at preventing diseases. In the autumn-winter period, it is important to protect the plants from the wind and from moisture that condenses during the thaw.

Preparing for winter:

  1. In autumn, the bushes are watered abundantly.
  2. An additional layer of mulch is laid: 5 - 10 cm for small and up to 30 cm for tall plants.
  3. The branches of deciduous varieties are tilted and fixed to the ground with wire. Then peat is laid on top or covered with corrugated cardboard.
  4. Important! Do not cover the plants with a film, as color may form under it.

  5. Evergreen species are covered with special frames, but so that the shoots are not constrained, and then covered with roofing material.
  6. The plants are protected from rain with a film with the possibility of moisture escape.
  7. If there is little snow in winter, a snowdrift is formed around the bush by hand.

You can shoot everything after the snow has melted and a positive average daily temperature has been established.

Before, during and after its flowering

Before the buds bloom

To lay azalea buds, a low air temperature (6 - 8 degrees) and limited watering are required. When the flower buds swell, the temperature is raised to 16 - 18 degrees.

During budding, you need to remove young shoots, as they weaken the plant and impair its flowering.

Active phase

Consider how to care for rhododendron at home and on the site during active flowering. The ideal temperature for flowering is 12-16 degrees. Under these conditions, azalea can bloom up to two months, while at 20 degrees - 2 weeks.

Unlike other plants, the azalea can be rotated and carried, however, drafts should be avoided.

After flowering

Remove dried inflorescences and form a crown, transplant.

Step-by-step instructions for growing potted and outdoor rhododendrons for beginners

Pick-up location

For breeding rhododendron, a flat area is selected, protected from wind and flooding, in this case it will be possible to achieve the best care for the plant. Optimal lighting is partial shade. Near the house they are planted at the northern, eastern and western walls. For azaleas, the proximity to the reservoir is useful. Then they bloom longer and retain the freshness of the foliage. They are very effectively combined with conifers. In the room for the plant, the brightest and coolest place is selected. East and southeast windows work well. It is important to avoid direct sunlight.

The soil

Rhododendrons need acidic soil (pH 4.2 - 5.5), although modern varieties of the INKARHO group also tolerate calcareous varieties well. You can use a special acidifying drug "Rodovital".

The ground under the plant should always be moist, but drainage should be used to avoid root rot. It is important to regularly loosen the soil and renew its top layer.

Conditions for keeping the tree

  • The optimum temperature is 10-15 degrees. Withstands from 20 - 25 degrees Celsius to 27 - 32 degrees below zero (with proper care).
  • Air humidity 70 - 80%.
  • Lighting - diffused sunlight.

Requires abundant watering throughout the growing season. Once a month, add a few drops of vinegar or lemon juice to the water. At the end of summer, watering should be reduced. Water must be poured not at the root, but 20 cm from the bush. Plants in flowerpots should be watered using a drip tray.

Attention: Azalea does not tolerate chlorine and lime, which are contained in tap water, so the latter must be allowed to settle for at least 5 - 6 hours before watering.

Top dressing

  1. When caring for garden rhododendrons in early spring, an infusion of mullein or humus is introduced.
  2. Before flowering, mineral fertilizers are used containing equal amounts of potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen.
  3. After the flowers wither, the plants need potassium and phosphorus in a ratio of 1: 2.

It is advisable to fertilize indoor varieties in the spring and summer once a week with fertilizers for azaleas:

  • ammonium sulfate;
  • ammonium nitrate;
  • superphosphate;
  • potassium sulfite.

During the budding period (autumn - winter), superphosphate is added in an amount of 15 grams per 10 liters of water.

Ash and fertilizers containing chlorine and lime must not be used.

Used as mulch:

  1. pine needles;
  2. fallen leaves;
  3. sawdust and shavings;
  4. peat;
  5. dry grass;
  6. small expanded clay.

The layer should not cover the root zone of the plant.

On hot days, in addition to the flowering period, plants are irrigated with settled tap or rain water. It is advisable to spray indoor species with cold boiled water, while moistening the lower part of the leaf.

Important: after spraying, direct sunlight should not fall on the plant, as burns remain in place of water droplets.

The early varieties are pruned in March - April, the late ones - in May - June after the flowers wither. At the same time, dead shoots are removed and a crown is formed.

There are two main types of formation:

  1. bole (small tree);
  2. bush.

Young plants do not form until the age of three. Only sanitary pruning is performed. It is necessary to use a sharp sterile instrument and process the cut sites with garden pitch.

Reference: buds are laid on annual shoots, so this year's growth is not cut off.

Indoor azaleas are transplanted at the end of flowering. Young plants - annually, adults - every 2 - 3 years. Use low wide pots, since the root system is shallow.

For garden species:

  1. prepare a pit 50 cm deep and 70 - 80 cm wide;
  2. make drainage from expanded clay, pieces of brick and sand;
  3. fill the pit with a mixture of the withdrawn land with peat, humus and sand;
  4. the surface is mulched.

When transplanting, it is important not to disturb the earthy ball so as not to damage the root system.

Possible problems and ways to solve them

  • Falling leaves and buds.

    Cause: a sudden change in environmental conditions or a lack of nutrients.

    Solution: transplant the plant, spray with growth stimulants: "Novosil", "Epin" or others. Place the bush under the film, ventilate daily.

    Also, root rot due to constant waterlogging can be the cause of leaf loss.

    Solution: Remove the plant along with a lump of earth, remove the dead roots (they are brown), dry and return to the pot. In the future, observe the watering regime.

  • Chlorosis of leaves (the leaves at the tops turn yellow, the tips turn black).

    Reason: an excess of chlorine, a lack of iron, magnesium and manganese due to the use of an incorrectly selected earthen mixture or irrigation with unsuitable water.

    Solution: water with soft, slightly acidified water, fertilize with iron chelate, Ferrovit. Transplant into plantable soil.

  • The leaves are wrinkled with brown spots and dry tips.

    Reason: improper watering, low humidity in the room, too bright lighting.

    Solution: adjust watering, remove from the bright sun, put a tray with water to increase humidity.

  • Short flowering period.

    Reason: high air temperature.

    Solution: lower the temperature with ice cubes.

  • Brown buds and buds.

    Reason: Rhododendron cicada, the larvae of which carry the causative agent of fungal disease.

    Solution: control of cicada with the drug "Decis" and other systemic insecticides, spraying with copper-containing preparations to prevent the spread of the disease. Affected buds and buds must be removed.

    Attention: for azaleas in the open field, copper-containing preparations should not be used if the air humidity is high. This can lead to burns on leaves and young shoots.

  • Orange bumps, cracks and sores on the leaves.

    Reason: rust (fungal disease). Its development is facilitated by high humidity and excess nitrogen fertilizers.

    Solution: feed the plant with complex fertilizers, where the ratio of elements has already been calculated. To fight the fungus, use fungicides: "Topaz", "Ordan", "Falcon" and others.

  • Black spots on the leaves.

    Reason: septoria is a fungal disease.

    Solution: treat with Profit or other fungicides.

  • Leaves wither and fall at the top. Pink bloom on the root collar.

    Reason: Fusarium (fungal disease). The fungus interferes with the movement of nutrients.

    Solution: treat with Fundazol.

  • Leaves are eaten. There are only veins left.

    Reason: the crunchy.

    Solution: treat with Diazinon.

  • Azalea moth: their caterpillars feed and pupate on leaves.

    Solution: fumigate and spray with sulfur.

As you can see, azalea is a rather capricious plant. But if all the recommendations are followed, it can be successfully grown both in the garden and in an apartment or office. Everyone can do it, and the result will not leave you indifferent.
