By all accounts, orchids are delicate and capricious creatures. However, it is also a fairly viable plant. And the more the orchid is damaged, the more its desire to live - when dying, it releases side shoots, tries to bloom. If this plant has damaged leaves and roots, there is still a good chance of saving it.

It may take a long time, but if the correct resuscitation actions are taken, the flower will come to life again. This article contains several options for saving a beautiful tropical plant in desperate situations.

How important are roots and leaves to a flower?

It is difficult to overestimate how important its roots and leaves are for a flower.

Orchid root system:

  • accumulates moisture for the plant;
  • stores nutrients;
  • produces photosynthesis.

In the natural environment, orchid roots are partially on the surface, they are never completely submerged in water or soil. Therefore, if the ground is too dry, do not flood the flower with water. Soak the roots of the plant for ten minutes in water, no more, and sprinkle the leaves with water from a spray bottle.

Full green leaves are not only about the beautiful and well-groomed appearance of an orchid. This is the main indicator of her health. A dense, healthy leaf takes maximum part in the process of photosynthesis, and this gives the orchid:

  • a sufficient amount of nutrients, the plant does not starve;
  • the supply of essential nutrients for her health.

Attention! As soon as the leaves appear damaged, you need to immediately look for the cause. Neglected problems can destroy the entire plant.

Consequences of the loss of vital organs

Obviously, without such important organs, the plant will not be able to live and will gradually die. The death of the root system is accompanied by the following characteristic features:

  • color change;
  • the presence of weeping, slimy areas;
  • the appearance of water when pressed on the root;
  • destruction of filamentous roots.

The reasons why the plant can part with them

The reasons why an orchid loses leaves and its root system dies can be very different.

  1. Improper watering. Due to inexperience, the plant is often flooded with water. In fact, the orchid requires water only after the substrate is completely dry. For proper watering, you need to know the size of the root system and the period of its activity. It helps well to control the process of planting an orchid in a transparent container with holes.
  2. Lighting. In the autumn-winter period, the orchid is in dire need of sufficient lighting. If the normal lighting system fails, the growth of the plant is disrupted. First of all, the leaves wither and fall. Then the root system begins to lose its vitality.
  3. Non-sterility of the substrate. Long-term presence of a flower in the same soil leads to the fact that various insects, fungi, and microorganisms grow in the substrate. Some of them are beneficial, and some lead to the death of the roots and leaves of the flower.
  4. Other reasons. It is not always possible to establish the cause of the death of the roots and leaves of an orchid. Then the flower is placed in a fungicide, for which they take it half as much as according to the instructions. Such regular treatment will strengthen the flower's immunity.

How to reanimate a flower at home?

Before rescuing an orchid, the damage should be assessed. For this:

  1. carefully remove the plant from the container;
  2. we remove the remnants of the substrate from the root system;
  3. wash the rhizome with warm water;
  4. we spread it on a towel, let it dry in the open air at room temperature;
  5. all instruments for further work are sterilized; for this they can be boiled or treated with a peroxide solution;
  6. we cut off all dead sections of the root system;
  7. the places of the cuts are treated with cinnamon powder, or coal powder (obtained from an activated carbon tablet).

Important! You do not need to remove yellowed leaves if the plant does not have roots - this is the only source of its nutrition. Also, dried pseudobulbs are not cut off. Resuscitation actions will depend on the condition of the flower and which parts of it remain healthy.

Resuscitation from sleeping kidneys, if no other materials are available

An orchid without roots and leaves can be tried to grow again if the peduncle is preserved. A baby can be grown from its sleeping buds.

This is done in two ways:

  1. place the cut peduncle in a container with water;
  2. divide the peduncle into parts with a dormant bud of two to three centimeters, put them on a damp substrate (sphagnum moss).

If a plant with one strong leaf or several lethargic, but no roots

When a flower has lost its root system, but at least one leaf, or a few leaves, albeit sluggish, has survived, its salvation has a confident chance. For rooting, the orchid is placed:

  • into a closed system;
  • in a greenhouse on a wet substrate;
  • fixed in a vessel over water.

New roots should grow from the bottom of the stem. Once this has happened, the vegetative part will begin to develop.

If the entire upper covering part has fallen off

If the flower has preserved its root system, but leaves are completely or partially lost, it is advised to plant it in fresh soil. and continue with your usual care. Watering should be replaced by spraying the substrate. After the root system grows, new leaves are formed from the growing point.

Is it possible to recover without a growth point?

If only the lower part of the stem with the root collar and a small part of the rhizome remain from the flower, it is placed in fresh soil. It should be looked after as usual. Spraying is excluded, watering is significantly reduced. In this mode, lateral shoots appear from dormant buds on the surface of the stem. These are orchid babies.

Resuscitation in greenhouse conditions creates a comfortable environment for the orchid, similar to its usual habitat. In the greenhouse, the temperature is constantly maintained at + 24-28 ° C, the humidity level should be 80-90%. Expanded clay, moss or a suitable substrate are placed on the bottom. The container must be ventilated, in autumn and winter, 10-12 hour daylight hours are provided.

Advice. A greenhouse can be made from an empty aquarium, a large plastic bottle, a bag, or an inverted container.

When is salvation useless?

With its special vitality, this tropical plant is able to survive without roots and without leaves, provided that its core is preserved. The most vital organ - in monopodial orchids it is a stem, in sympodial orchids it is a rhizome, almost invisible, and hidden among densely growing leaves and bulbs. But without this "heart" it will no longer be possible to revive the orchid.

Recovery period

A quick effect from resuscitation procedures is hardly possible. The orchid recovers for a very long time, from three months to a year. The flower's recovery takes place better in the warm season, in winter it takes much longer.

When the plant has just given new roots, it does not require feeding. Also, for a while, abundant watering is not needed - it is better to keep the soil in a slightly dried state.

The health and full development of your favorite orchid is entirely up to you. It is necessary to create good conditions for the flower, provide proper care and regularly carry out visual inspection. If the orchid is sick or damaged, do not be discouraged - this is a life-loving plant, and with the right actions it will definitely recover. The main thing is to know how you can help your pet.
