Amaryllis is a flower with beautiful, large flowers of various colors. He comes from South Africa, but there his flowers are smaller in size and do not smell, in our living conditions he has an amazing aroma.

A real amaryllis, despite its bright appearance and unpretentious content, can rarely be seen on the windowsills of Russian apartments. To grow amaryllis beautiful and healthy, you need to select good quality bulbs. How to grow a flower correctly is discussed in this article.

Flower reproduction methods

How the flower reproduces:

  1. Separating babies from the bulb.
  2. By seed method.

Growing from seeds

Growing a flower with seeds is considered a difficult and time-consuming process that does not give a guaranteed result. When planting, all the subtleties should be taken into account or the seeds simply will not germinate. To grow amaryllis from seeds, you need to do a lot of work and choose the right inventory.

The cultivation process can be divided into the following stages:

  1. Preparation for planting selected seeds, this method begins with the transfer of pollen from one flower to the stigma of another. This can be done with a soft brush. For the result to be more effective, the flower should be pollinated twice.

Within three weeks after pollination, a seed pod appears on the flower, which contains about 40-70 seeds. Ripe seeds are considered when small cracks appear on the box. The seeds are small in size and have a dark skin color. Before planting the seed, carefully remove the peel and plant the seed in it.

  2. Preparing the soil and pot: Choose a medium-sized pot so that the seeds are not too close together as they grow. The composition of the soil for rapid germination should include: leafy earth and humus. A seed should be planted in a prepared place to a depth of 0.5 centimeters and sprinkled with earth.

For quick germination of seeds, it is recommended to adhere to the main rule, you need to maintain the air temperature from + 21 to +24 degrees Celsius and maintain soil moisture. If all planting conditions are met, the seed germinates within one month.

  3. It is important to know how to properly plant seeds in a pot. Before planting, you need to water the soil a little. Then the container with seeds is covered with plastic wrap to create a greenhouse effect and placed in a darkened place where the temperature will not be lower than +23 degrees. A month later, the first shoots should appear.

It is possible to transplant them in separate pots only when 2 leaves grow on the sprouts. This will happen in 2.5–3 months. Keep in mind that seed-grown amaryllis will only begin to bloom after 5-8 years.

Growing from a bulb at home

The method is considered very simple, from the bulb - the uterus is separated "babies" during transplantation. First, you need to remove all dry scales from the bulb, and then separate the "kids". The diameter of the pot for new bulbs should be medium so that the young bulbs can fit freely.

Before planting in a pot, the bulb should be thoroughly examined, it should be intact. If you find such defects on the bulb as: mold, stains, soft dents, then you should not plant it. For planting, it is worth choosing bulbs from 5 to 7 centimeters in diameter.

You need to plant as follows:

  1. Remove all scales from the onion until its surface becomes a uniform light green color. After removal, it must be soaked for 30-40 minutes in a weak solution of potassium permanganate, after the procedure done, leave to dry for one day.
  2. Lay a layer of expanded clay on the bottom of the pot.
  3. Pour the soil and plant the bulb in it so that 2/3 of its "body" remains on the surface.
  4. Lightly crush the soil around the bulb and moisten it.

Important! All procedures with a flower should be performed with gloves, since the bulbs contain poison.

Can I grow in the garden?

For the successful cultivation of amaryllis in the garden, the following rules should be observed:

  1. Choose a suitable place on the site and planting material. The bulb must be healthy and free of any damage, its roots must be well developed.
  2. Before planting, you need to remove the scales from it and treat it with a disinfectant, it can be a weak solution of potassium permanganate or fungicides. You need to soak the onion for thirty minutes, then leave it to dry for one day. Once the bulb is dry, you can start planting.
  3. For growing a flower outdoors, it is recommended to choose a sunny area. It can be located on the south side or in a calm place.
  4. During flowering, it is worth paying more attention to the soil and its moisture; if necessary, it is recommended to introduce the plant to feed.
  5. The soil must be fertile and moisture-permeable. If these requirements are not met, it is recommended to treat the selected area with organic mineral fertilizers and loosen the soil.
  6. The planting period in open ground is May - June. When planting, you need to take into account the distance between the flowers, it should not be less than 10-15 centimeters from each other. To spread the roots of a flower, you need to make spacious and deep holes. After the roots have been spread, cover the planting material with earth.
  7. Keep a close eye on the plant, as in the open field it can encounter various diseases and pests.
  8. After the bulb has been planted, water the flower sparingly. When the shoot grows to 10-12 centimeters, water procedures increase, during this period the flower needs more moisture.

Subject to planting rules, amaryllis will bloom in late August or early September.

Care after landing

Amaryllis is one of the most beautiful indoor plants. It attracts with its graceful leaves, delicate inflorescences and delicate, pleasant aroma. At the same time, caring for a flower does not require special skills. After any type of reproduction, amaryllis does not require special care, since its flowering occurs at least two years after planting (read about why amaryllis does not bloom and how to make it give buds, read here). The main thing in caring for this flower is the constant moisture of the earth, but in no case should the plant be flooded.

Top dressing after transplanting can be done almost immediately, because this flower does not need additional rest. As for amaryllis in the garden, in this case it is imperative to monitor the condition of the plant of its leaves because there is a high risk of plant disease. The main thing is to observe the following recommendations:

  • You should not often water the flower, but you need to monitor the moisture content of the soil and not let it dry out.
  • Good lighting is very important for a flower, so the plant should be placed in a brighter place.
  • New plants should be planted in small pots.
  • All procedures for caring for a flower should be done only with gloves, as its juice is poisonous.

Watering mode

Water the flower after the soil dries. To avoid contact of the bulb with water, it is recommended to pour water into the pan of the pot.

The air humidity in the room where the plant is located should not exceed 80%. In case of high humidity, the plant may develop a fungal disease. During the dormant period of the flower, the humidity should be maintained from 60 to 90%.

During active growth, the plant needs to be provided with additional vitamins and minerals. During this period, mineral and organic fertilizers should be added. You need to apply fertilizer no more than once a week.... Organic fertilizers are made as follows:

  • Dilute ten grams of bird droppings into ten liters of water.
  • Dissolve 25 grams of mullein into ten liters of water.

Mineral fertilizer is diluted in the ratio: three grams per liter of water.

Pests and diseases

This plant is loved by many pests, especially often the flower suffers from fungal diseases. In order to prevent the appearance of the disease, water stagnation in the soil of the flower should be avoided. Read more about diseases and pests and the treatment of aloe vera here.

Aramillis is a gorgeous exotic flower from Africa that stands out for its beautiful and spectacular blooms. The flower is not very whimsical, both in care and after transplantation. This one has a very simple breeding process, which even a novice florist can handle. The only thing is that the flowering process does not come so soon after transplantation. But the time spent on cultivation is worth admiring these beautiful flowers for a long time afterwards.
