Although carrots are considered an unpretentious crop, in the process of growing it, if you do not follow certain rules, you can face problems with a decrease in the quality of the crop, damage by diseases or pests, and even death.

If you know the reasons for this or that problem, as well as know how to deal with it, you can have time to correct the situation and get an excellent harvest of carrots by the end of the summer season.

You will learn what to do if the carrot is curled, why it curls, the tops turn yellow, and other problems arise. You will understand what are the causes of such problems.

The reasons why there are problems, what to do and how to handle?

Falls in the garden / leaves fall off

  • If the tops of the plant darkens, dries and falls off, it is possible that planting too denseespecially if it coincided with heavy rains. To remedy the situation, you can treat the plants with Oxyhom, a fungicidal powder based on copper oxychloride and oxadisil.

    It is used in dry calm weather in the morning or evening hours - mix 20-30 g of powder with 10 liters of water and spray the plants.

  • Also, the reason for the fall of carrots can be carrot fly invasion, which begins to lay its larvae in the ground in the spring. As one of the methods of struggle, planting onions next to carrots is used, the smell of which scares away the fly.

    If the carrots have already been attacked by a fly, you can prepare a mixture of ash and tobacco, and sprinkle with this powder or red pepper between the rows. Industrial insecticides are also suitable, including Aktellik, Intavir, Zemlin, Bazudin and others.

If the plant turns yellow

The first inspection of the beds with carrots should take place as soon as 3-4 leaves appear on the first shoots. Already at this moment you can see if the plants have any problems.

Also, yellowing of the tops of an already grown plant may begin. As a rule, the reasons for the yellowing of seedlings and tops are the same:

  1. Dry weather or night frosts - since it is impossible to predict the weather conditions, carrots should be planted in several stages.
  2. Over or under watering - before the first shoots appear, carrots need to be watered often in small amounts. When the roots begin to grow, watering is needed less often, but the water consumption will be greater.

    It is important to focus on the condition of the soil - clay soils are watered less often, sandy soils - more often.

    Watering should be done from a watering can with settled water, since the roots, especially in hot weather, do not absorb cold water. In addition, due to cold water, partial death of the roots occurs. Watering is also required after each thinning.

  3. Over or under feeding - carrots need feeding 3-4 times per season.
    • The first time fertilization is applied approximately 20 days after germination (when there are three true leaves) or after the first thinning.

      One of the options for feeding can be the following recipe - stir 1 tsp in 10 liters of water. urea, 1 tsp of potassium magnesium and extract from 1-2 tbsp. superphosphate (the extract is prepared the day before feeding - the superphosphate is poured into a liter of hot water, stirred for an hour, defended and the upper translucent layer is taken away).

    • 2-3 weeks after the first feeding (when 5-7 true leaves have formed on the plants), a second feeding should be carried out using a complex fertilizer - nitrophoska, nitroammofoska are suitable.
    • The third feeding is carried out at the stage of active growth of root crops. Preference should be given to organic fertilizers - for example, dry ash or ash infusion (2 glasses of ash are infused in 1-2 liters of boiling water for two days, then the resulting solution is brought to a volume of 10 liters). Previously, the beds are watered abundantly, fertilizer is applied to the aisles and shallowly loosened.
    • Also, 2-3 weeks before harvesting, you can carry out the final feeding with the help of an infusion of ash or a solution of potassium sulfate (consumption of 2 tbsp. Fertilizer per 10 liters of water).
  4. Incorrectly selected variety of carrots, which is not suitable for growing in a specific climatic zone - preference should be given to proven carrot varieties, as well as to carefully study the features of a particular variety (read about which varieties are suitable for growing in the climatic zone of Siberia, and for cultivation in the Urals - described here ).
  5. Abundance of weeds... Weeds limit the plant's growth area.
  6. Infected Seeds - in order to disinfect the seeds, they should be warmed up before planting at a temperature of 40 ° C for at least 30 minutes. You can also treat with a solution of potassium permanganate.
  7. Contaminated soil - carrots cannot be planted in the same beds where onions or cabbage were grown in the last season, since these crops have the same pests and diseases. In addition, carrots can be planted in their original place only after 3-4 years.
  8. Diseases and pests - carrot flies, scoops and flies are often the cause of yellowing and wilting of the tops. Insects gnaw at roots and feed on carrot juice. For pest control, both folk remedies (infusion of onion husks, processing with ash with tobacco or red pepper) and insecticides are suitable.

White or yellow core inside, not orange

  • The reason for this phenomenon may be excess nitrogen against the background of a lack of potassium and phosphorus... It is worth reducing the use of fertilizers containing nitrogen and increasing the feeding with potash-phosphorus fertilizers and ash.
  • Besides, the reason may lie in not very high quality seeds... In this case, it is worth changing the place of purchase of seeds.

Dense shoots are formed

This is a consequence of too dense planting, therefore, in order to avoid too dense seedlings, the thinning procedure should not be neglected. Moreover you need to start thinning with the appearance of the first two leaves.

You can also use one of the following methods at the stage of planting carrots:

  • plant seeds on belts (where the seeds are already glued at a distance of 4-5 cm from each other);
  • mix seeds with sand;
  • buy a special seeder;
  • use a marker (a wooden plank with teeth attached at a certain distance, which, when pressed on the bed, leave indentations for the seeds).

It cracks in the ground

  • Uneven watering can lead to cracking of carrots. Often, gardeners who have the opportunity to take care of the garden only on weekends try to water the beds that have dried up in a week as abundantly as possible (how to care for carrots in the open field?). As a result, increased pressure is created in the soil - the roots cannot withstand. Heavy rains also often cause cracking in carrots.
  • An excess of nitrogenous fertilizers in the summer can also cause root cracking. It is worth remembering that plants need nitrogen in the initial stage of growth, subsequently the plant needs potassium and phosphorus.
  • It is possible that the carrots are ready to be harvested and are starting to overripe - do not delay the harvest.

Not sweet or juicy

  • Usually, late varieties differ in less sweetness and juiciness. Therefore, if you want to eat sweet and juicy carrots, you should give preference to early varieties.
  • Insufficient watering may be another reason for the deterioration in the taste of carrots.
  • Excess nitrogen and lack of potassium, phosphorus and boron can lower sugar in carrots. Replenishing the lack of macro- and micronutrients, as well as fertilization with manganese sulfate can help to raise the level of carotene and sugar.

Curls / curls / curls

  • Often it is pests (leaf flies, carrot flies or aphids) are guilty of curling the carrots.
  • However, plants potassium or magnesium may not be enough (in this case, the leaves curl in June and become bluish in color). To remedy the situation, you can spray the tops with ash infusion.

Carrots grow ugly: horny, gnarled or hairy

  • Often unprepared soil (lumps and stones in the soil) leads to deformation of root crops.
  • Over or under watering (due to drought, carrots release additional thin roots in search of moisture).
  • Incorrect feeding (carrots do not like fresh manure, as well as potassium chloride and potassium salt) also lead to curvature of carrots.

We suggest watching a video on why carrots can grow ugly:

Very small

The causes of small carrots can be:

  1. The weather is too hot.
  2. Features of the variety - the size of the mature roots is written in the description of each variety. Medium-sized carrots should be preferred.
  3. Lack of sun - carrots are a very light-loving plant, so you need to plant them in areas that are constantly in the light.
  4. Acidic soil:
    • firstly, acidic soil contributes to the growth of pest activity and the spread of diseases;
    • secondly, it can cause small root crops.

    Several methods are suitable for deoxidizing the soil - the use of ash, dolomite flour, carefully crushed chalk, slaked lime or green manure.

    Each of the methods has its own characteristics - for example, pre-molten flour additionally enriches the earth with magnesium, calcium and other useful components, while from an environmental point of view, it is absolutely safe. Ash works best in combination with other drugs, as it does not by itself compensate for calcium deficiency.

What to do to avoid a bad harvest?

Although the list of problems that arise in the process of growing carrots is quite extensive, the ways to deal with them are basically the same:

  • the right choice of carrot variety;
  • preparation of seeds and soil for planting;
  • compliance with the rules of crop rotation;
  • fertilization of the soil both at the stage of preparation for planting carrots, and further application of dressings at different stages of growth of root crops;
  • optimal watering;
  • timely thinning and getting rid of weeds;
  • prevention of pest and disease control at the stage of soil preparation, as well as the timely use of insecticides (both folk and industrial) in case of plant infection;
  • timely harvest.

Carrots are considered a fairly unpretentious crop, however, there are a number of features that should be taken into account when growing it. Timely monitoring of the condition of the tops and growing root crops can help to quickly correct the problems that have arisen and take measures to solve them. In addition, preventive measures are also important for a high-quality harvest, which will often help to avoid problems in the future.
