The critical stage of preparation for growing seedlings from tomato seeds begins in late winter - early spring.

It was during this period that amateurs and professional gardeners purchased or prepared soil, seeds, artificial lighting devices for future seedlings.

The most practical and favorable method for obtaining a good harvest of tomatoes, among many others, is growing seedlings in cups.

The essence of the method

Tomato seeds are planted in insulated small containers... Seedlings will remain in them until they are planted in open ground. Provided this method is used, it is not required to dive the seedlings.

  • Greater air access to the roots of seedlings.
  • Reducing the negative impact of too much watering.
  • Lack of interlacing of the roots of neighboring plants. Separation of intertwined roots when planting in open ground creates the risk of mechanical trauma to the roots.
  • The ability to grow seedlings without additional transplanting (diving) into a larger container.
  • In the case of a disease of the root system of an individual plant, the infection does not spread to others, its effect is limited to a glass.

  • The need for constant monitoring of the adequacy of soil moisture (in the case of using a peat container).
  • Occurring low quality of materials used in the production of peat cups (too high percentage of paper, which, when transplanted into open ground, will block the access of moisture and nutrients to the roots).

Absolutely any varieties are suitable for growing tomatoes in cups, it will be more important to be guided by your taste and climatic living conditions.

If the first decade of May is characterized by a steady onset of warmth, you need to return 65-70 days ago according to the calendar - this will be the optimal time for planting seeds using this technology.

What volume and type should the container be?

It is very common to use sphagnum peat cups for growing tomatoes (sphagnum provides reliable protection of the roots from decay). A tomato seedling is planted in open ground with a glass.

You can use containers made by yourself. The most convenient are plastic cups. The optimal volume is 500 ml, this will allow not to dive; when using 100 ml cups, tomatoes are grown until 2-3 leaves appear. You can also cut a plastic bottle to the required volume, small cardboard milk boxes will do.

The main condition when using plastic or other homemade containers: holes should be made at the bottom to avoid the accumulation of excess liquid after watering the plants. When planting in the ground, the seedlings are taken out of the glasses together with the soil.

Seed preparation stages

  • Rejection.
  • Disinfection.

About a day before the start of planting seeds, they are discarded... This action is mandatory if you use seeds that were harvested 3-4 years ago. Provided that the seeds prepared for planting are fresh, the rejection process is optional.

  1. To select high-quality seeds, you need to pour half a glass of water, pour into it and dissolve a teaspoon of salt.
  2. Pour the seeds into the solution and leave them for 10 minutes.
  3. The floating seeds of the desired harvest will not give, they are boldly thrown away.
  4. The remaining seeds are washed from salt, they are planted in cups in 2 ways: swollen or dry.

Gardeners differ on the best method. Since the seeds will germinate in fairly favorable temperature conditions, they can be planted dry.

To swell the seeds before planting, they are poured onto a plate with a napkin soaked in water, covered with a transparent lid and kept for a day.

For the purpose of disinfection, the seeds are treated with manganese... 1-2 crystals are dissolved in water at room temperature so that the water is barely colored, and the seeds are soaked in it for 15 minutes.

The choice of soil for tomatoes

When choosing a soil in a store, be sure to pay attention to the presence of phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium in its composition in the amount of 400 mg / l. Otherwise, the nutrition of tomato seedlings will not be sufficient.

The soil can be prepared at home. To do this, mix 70% of the earth, 15% of sand, fine ash, peat (sawdust), 15% of humus.

To exclude the effect of microbes contained in the ground on seedlings, the soil is disinfected: heated in an oven at a high temperature for 60 minutes or poured with boiling water. After the procedure, the soil is again watered and stored for 14 days. before warm use.

How to plant seeds?

  • Pour the soil into prepared containers, crush slightly. The volume that the soil should occupy is 2/3 of the volume of the glass.
  • Watering.
  • Distribution of seeds in containers (2-4 seeds / glass):
    1. pour 1-1.5 cm of soil over the seeds, water;
    2. cover containers with seeds with polyethylene to retain moisture;
    3. when sprouts appear, move the glasses to a place with good illumination. Before seed germination, light does not play an important role.

How to grow seedlings?

  • When the first shoots appear, you need to provide a little round-the-clock lighting.
  • There are no special requirements for the irrigation process, the soil should always be moderately moist, and the sprouts should be periodically sprayed from a spray bottle.
  • Every day, it is advisable to unfold the seedlings to the sunlight on the other side so that the seedlings do not bend.
  • When warm weather is established, young shoots need to be accustomed to the temperature conditions of open ground: initially, keep the cups with seedlings for 10-15 minutes on the balcony, gradually increasing this time.
  • Once every two weeks, fertilizing is added to the cups with seedlings: urea, potassium salt and Superphosphate are mixed in 1 liter of water (0.5 g, 1.5 g, 4 g, respectively). The second time is fertilized with such a mixture: 4 g of Superphosphate, 0.6 g of ammonium nitrate and 2 g of potassium sulfate are added to a liter of water. The third feeding contains only urea.

The method of growing tomatoes in cups significantly saves the time of growing seedlings; it is convenient and simple, therefore it is also suitable for those who are just beginning to understand crop production issues. Subject to the above rules and careful attention to the plant, the harvest will delight you with its abundance and taste.
