Radish is considered one of the earliest vegetable crops. Usually, by the end of May, you can already harvest the first crop. But these terms imply a landing in open ground.

But if you plant radishes under a film, you can wait for the harvest even earlier. In this article we will tell you when it is better to plant a radish and how to grow it.

Today we will talk about the pros and cons of growing radishes under film, the differences between this method and others, as well as when and at what temperature you can start sowing seeds.

Features of this growing method

Planting these root crops under a film has a number of nuances that are worth mentioning:

  • it is advisable to choose early ripening varieties;
  • you need to take care of additional lighting, but at the same time make sure that the vegetables do not overheat;
  • prepare the correct soil, which will have neutral acidity and all the necessary elements and substances.

Differences from other methods

The main difference between planting under film is the ability to harvest in early spring, while maintaining all the species and taste qualities of radishes without the use of chemicals. Unlike a greenhouse, a film shelter does not require such financial investments.

Advantages and disadvantages

The advantages of the procedure include the following points:

  • getting an early harvest;
  • with the correct selection of the variety, the yield indicators can increase compared to growing in the open field;
  • growing conditions can be controlled or at least adjusted;
  • you can not be afraid of adverse weather conditions;
  • the rate of maturation of root crops increases;
  • taste is not lost.

However, planting under the film also has its drawbacks:

  • high humidity and freezing temperatures lead to the appearance of pests and diseases of a fungal nature;
  • rodents that are found on the site can harm the crop.

When and at what temperature can you sow?

The optimal planting time for radishes is the period when the soil has thawed to a depth of three centimeters - this is the depth needed for sowing seeds. Radish is a frost-resistant crop, but it is desirable that the air warms up to at least 5 degrees Celsius.

but the vegetable can withstand small frosts up to -2 degrees. It all depends on the climatic conditions of a particular region, but in most of Russia, crops begin from the first days of March.

Reference! To get a harvest for a long time, you need to sow the seeds before the end of spring with an interval of one week.

Build a greenhouse in advance or cover crops in the open field - what to choose?

It all depends on the size of your greenhouse. If the dimensions are large enough and they allow you to comfortably sow seeds in the beds, then you can install a greenhouse before planting. However, if the scale of cultivation is not very large, it is best to sow the radishes first, and only then install a film shelter.

Features of planting in early spring - in March and April

In this case, it is important to remember that the soil must be loosened in the fall. In the process of plowing into the soil, you need to immediately add compost, and in the spring, add mineral fertilizers (read more about the methods of fertilizing radishes and how to feed them after germination, read here). Also, do not forget that at the beginning of spring the daylight hours are still short, and radishes need a lot of light, so you will have to resort to additional lighting.

Step-by-step instructions on how to plant radishes

Variety selection

The most suitable varieties of radish for sowing in a greenhouse are early maturing and early maturing. Of the early ripening varieties, the following varieties are most suitable for a greenhouse:

  • "Ultra early red";
  • "Child F1";
  • "18 days";
  • "Firstborn F1".

All of these species are ready to be harvested within 20 days after the first shoots appear. By the way, seeds germinate under the film within only 3-4 days.

From early maturing varieties, it is better to give preference to the following:

  • Early Red;
  • "Heat";
  • Celeste F1.

Important! When choosing a variety, check its soil composition preferences.

An important factor in the choice of seeds is their size. For greenhouse planting, large seeds are most suitable, the diameter of which is approximately 3.5 mm. Smaller seeds are best left for outdoor planting.

Where and for how much to buy seeds?

The approximate cost will be indicated for Moscow and St. Petersburg.

You can buy seed at any specialty store. And now you can do it even without leaving your home. There are many online stores, whose specialists will help you choose, and a courier will deliver the entire order to your home.

The average price for 0.5 kg of seeds for Moscow ranges from 400-700 rubles, depending on the variety. In St. Petersburg, prices are slightly lower and start at 300 rubles per 500 grams of seed.

Preparation of inventory and seeds

No special tools are needed for this procedure. It is enough just to have a small shovel and a bucket for watering.

But the seeds require preliminary processing. Selected large seeds should be soaked in a weak solution of potassium permanganate for half an hour.

Thus, the agronomist will be able to get rid of the dummies, since such seeds immediately float. Then the seeds are washed under running water and dried. And then wrapped in cheesecloth and placed in ordinary water for soaking. After all these procedures, the seeds are ready for planting.

Radish is sown under the film as follows:

  1. The soil is puffed up and grooves are made with a depth of 2 centimeters. The distance between the grooves is 1 decimeter.
  2. Moisturizes wells well.
  3. Seeds are placed in the grooves at a distance of 2-3 centimeters.
  4. Then the seed is covered with a small layer of soil, it is desirable that it be light and sandy.
  5. A little snow should be poured on top, which will moisten the soil during thawing.
  6. Then you need to install the supporting arcs at a distance of half a meter from each other and retreat the same amount from the bed itself.
  7. A film is pulled over the installed arcs, which must be properly secured.

Radish care

After sowing, control the moisture content of the soil, since in a dry substrate, radish will develop very slowly. If hot days come, take care of daily watering with prepared, settled water. It is best to carry out this procedure in the morning.
But at the same time, stagnation of water and the formation of swamps in the beds should not be allowed. This is especially true of the last days before harvesting (read more about watering radishes in this article). After each watering, the soil must be loosened. If the air does not circulate well, it can lead to cracking of the root vegetables.

Combine this procedure with weed removal. Also it is important to ensure that the radish does not grow too thick, therefore, after the first shoots, the seedlings must be thinned out in such a way that a distance of about 5 centimeters is maintained between them.

Illumination is an important condition for growing. With a lack of light, the fruits will be small, and only the tops will grow. Therefore, it is best to plant this crop in areas open to the sun.

Usually, there is no need for feeding, since the ripening period of the radish is very short. However, if the soil is very poor, it must be fertilized before planting. To do this, a tablespoon of nitrophoska is diluted in 10 liters of pure water. This solution is enough for 2-3 square meters.

Possible problems and solutions

Very often, agronomists are faced with such a problem when seedlings do not appear for a long time. The reason for this may be a lack of moisture, nutrients in the soil, as well as low temperature indicators. therefore it is important to feed the soil a little before planting, and also observe the correct watering regime.

Pests can also attack radishes. Cruciferous flea beetles often attack. You can fight it in biological ways.

Water the crop with a solution of ash or tobacco dust. Garlic tincture is also excellent for this. This must be done several times in a row. The most important thing is to save the first shoots from the flea, otherwise, otherwise, the entire crop may be destroyed.

It is not difficult to grow radishes under the film. With a little effort and spending a little time, the agronomist will be able to get an early harvest, in the quality and naturalness of which he can be completely sure.
