The very name of this variety of radish suggests that in many respects this variety is a champion. In terms of taste, benefits and productivity, he cannot be compared with any of his relatives.

In this article, we will describe the main species characteristics of the Champion, the rules for planting and growing such a variety, and also talk about the main advantages and disadvantages. In addition, we will show in the photo what this type of radish looks like.

Detailed characteristics and description

All fruits have a slightly raised rosette. The foliage is a rich green hue, the leaf itself is often dissected in shape. The size of root crops is average - they reach 18-20 grams in weight. The radish is inversely ovoid, with a rounded apex. There is a slight pubescence on each fruit. The color of the radish is intense, red. Heads are often well-roundedhowever, slightly convex cases sometimes occur.

During cultivation, the fruits are completely in the ground. The pulp of the radish is juicy, white. According to the reviews of the agronomists themselves, the fruits have high taste characteristics. Radish is characterized by medium bitterness, in the middle of the fruit there is a moderate sweetness. The rind is soft, very thin.

Sowing time

Champion variety is considered an early ripening vegetable... It is planted with seeds in a greenhouse at the end of March. And the first seedlings are transferred to open ground a month later - at the end of April.

It is important to make sure that the earth is warm enough - at least up to six degrees Celsius.

Yield indicators of Champion radish are average... About one kilogram of fruit grows on one square meter. In rare cases, the yield reaches one and a half kilograms.

Where is it recommended to grow?

This kind of crop as Champion is suitable for growing in different conditions: both in greenhouses and in the open field, and even at home. The main thing is to comply with the necessary growing conditions.

You can prepare a homemade greenhouse. For this, a plot of land with sown seeds is simply covered with foil or glass.

Disease resistance

Radish Champion has good immunity to various diseases and pest attacks. It is worth saying that this variety does not start up arrows (that is, it is resistant to flowering). Based on this, during cultivation, there is no need to resort to the help of chemicals: insecticides and fungicides, which have the ability to accumulate in root crops.

Ripening terms

As soon as the first mass shoots appear, you need to wait literally another three weeks (more precisely, 20-25 days). This property of the Champion radish gives agronomists the opportunity to get several harvests in one season.

After the first shoots have emerged, you need to thin out the radish, leaving about five centimeters between each seedling.

What kind of soil does he prefer?

For planting Champion radishes, it is best to prepare light, well-loosened soil.

So that the soil is not very heavy, it is better to add coarse river sand to it.

The acidity of the substrate must be neutral or weak... If on your site there is a soil with high acidity, you can reduce it by adding lime or wood ash.

Ideally, if there are sandy loam soils on the site.

How long are vegetables stored?

After harvesting, the crop is stored for quite a long time - about one and a half months.

During this period, the radish does not become flabby, it retains its taste and excellent presentation.

Breeding history

We are grateful to Czech botanists for breeding this hybrid Champion variety. In Russia, the variety appeared at the end of the 20th century.... In 1999, the variety was registered and allowed for breeding on the territory of the Russian Federation.

What is the difference from other species?

Like many other hybrid varieties of radish, Champion is characterized by resistance to diseases and pests, frost, and fast ripening.

However, the main feature of the champion is its relatively small size. root vegetable weight usually does not exceed 20 grams... Therefore, the yield of this variety is not the highest - a little more than a kilogram per square meter.

Advantages and disadvantages

The main advantages of the variety include the following features:

  • inherent immunity to diseases, parasites;
  • the ability to survive a slight cold snap;
  • lack of voids in fruits with late harvest;
  • small leaf rosette, which allows you to plant fruits closer to each other;
  • taste at a high level;
  • the ability to get several harvests per season;
  • preservation of a presentation for a long time.

The only drawbacks can be considered only the size of the fruits, so agronomists rarely use this variety for planting for sale, despite its external data.

For what and where is it used?

Often, gardeners plant this variety only for home cultivation. Such radishes are great for use in salads, cold soups and snacks, as well as for consumption in a separate form.

Growing varieties

There is no need to pre-soak the seeds. They are sown in the greenhouse at the end of March.

  1. Wells are prepared with a depth of no more than three centimeters.
  2. Before planting, compost and humus are placed in the holes, after that another small layer of soil and only then the seeds.
  3. After the seedlings sprout, they should be done less often, getting rid of the weakest. The distance between the radishes should be five centimeters.
  4. A month after sowing, you can transfer the seedlings to open ground, which should be warmed up to at least 4 degrees Celsius.

    Do not be afraid of small drops in temperature - radishes will be able to tolerate this.

The soil needs to be fertilized only before sowing the planting material.... During the growing season, radishes will not need feeding. Remember that this crop does not tolerate organic fertilizers (manure and droppings) and nitrogen-based fertilizing.

Water the crop abundantly so that the soil is moistened up to 10 centimeters in depth.

When choosing a place to land it is best to give preference to well-lit areas... Light partial shade may work, but by no means completely shaded areas. Since in this case only tops will grow, and root crops will be even smaller.

Harvesting and storage

You can harvest the crop 25 days after the first shoots appear. For storage, it is best to prepare wooden boxes in which there will be slots for air ventilation. It is best to place boxes in the basement. But it also needs to be prepared by pretreating all surfaces with lime. Such a procedure will protect against mold, dampness and many pests.

Lay the radishes in layers. It is best to put paper between each layer so that the fruits do not come into contact with each other. In this state, it will be possible to keep the vegetable for a month. At the same time, the radish will not become flabby and will not lose its taste.

Diseases and pests

We have already said that The champion is the result of the work of breeders - a hybrid, therefore, it is already initially protected from many ailments and parasites. But all this is possible only with proper care.

But there are insects that still attack the Champion - cruciferous flea and leaf beetle. These pests affect the leaf plates, which can kill the entire culture.

It is best to fight parasites with homemade solutions. It is better not to resort to the help of insecticides and fungicides.

Insect preparations:

  • tomato tops (pour half a bucket of tops with a bucket of water);
  • weak vinegar solution;
  • tincture of ash, makhorka and ground pepper.

Prevention of various problems

To avoid all sorts of problems with the Champion radish, you just have to adhere to the growing rules:

  • good lighting;
  • regular watering;
  • fertilizing the soil before planting;
  • timely weeding;
  • protection against pests.
