Often in the summer our attention is attracted by balconies, terraces, flower beds decorated with hanging pots with ampelous begonia. And this is not surprising: a lush cascade of bright colors looks like a real fireworks. Almost every flower lover dreams of a similar decor element on his site or in his apartment. What do you need to know about this exotic plant?

Ampel begonia is a tuberous variety of begonia with long, cascading shoots (about 30 - 40 cm), strewn with bright flowers: male (large and elegant) and female (small and simple), the diameter of which is about 8 cm.Duration of flowering of one flower - 10 days. Flowering time is from spring to late autumn. Read in the article how to plant a flower, how to properly care for it at home.

The necessary conditions

Begonia is a very unpretentious and grateful flower. Observing the elementary conditions of keeping the plant, you can achieve what you want: the lush flowering of begonias during the spring-autumn period.

  • Air. Ampel begonia loves fresh air. She will feel comfortable in a hanging basket or pot on a balcony, summer veranda, gazebo, or just in a flowerpot on a high leg, exposed to the open air in the warm season.

Attention! If this is not possible, and the flower grows in the apartment, then it will simply need frequent airing.

Although begonia is a hardy plant, it still does not tolerate drafts, heavy rain, and wind. If bad weather broke out on the street, then the container with a flower must be brought into a sheltered room.

  • Temperature. The optimum temperature for ampelous begonia is considered to be + 18C- + 20C, but it can easily withstand an increase in temperature to + 25C and a decrease to + 12C.

  • Shine. This flower prefers diffused sunlight or partial shade. It is impossible to put begonias in a completely dark place, since in this case, stretching of the shoots and the cessation of flowering are possible.

  • Humidity. Begonia loves moisture, but spraying from a spray bottle is destructive for her. Often, experienced flower growers do the following: next to the begonia pot, place a container with water or place the pot in a tray covered with expanded clay. A layer of expanded clay is systematically moistened with water, the evaporation of which will create the necessary moisture level for begonias.

How to plant a flower?

Ampel begonia is tuberous, therefore, it propagates in tubers. It is not difficult to plant a plant: for this, you should purchase strong and healthy tubers, the diameter of which exceeds 3 cm.Tubers are considered good if they are peeled, without stains and damage, and have from 3 to 7 buds on their surface.

Reference. From January to May, tubers are planted in containers with a moist substrate, most of which is peat. The rounded side of the tuber is pressed into the ground by half, that is, its concave part remains above the ground. The optimum temperature for sprouting tubers is considered to be + 18C - + 20C.

Care after planting in containers of ampelous begonias should be carried out in such a way as not to harm the still weak plant. Watering the tubers during this period should be very careful.

Watering can be done in a pan, remembering to drain the remaining water after 15 - 20 minutes. When the sprouts reach 5 cm in height, they are transplanted into individual pots.completely covering the tuber with soil.

There is another way to plant ampelous begonias.

  1. Tubers with a convex part are placed on a moistened napkin or a layer of sand.
  2. Within 2 days, they are periodically sprayed from a spray bottle with warm water and a solution of growth stimulants. When thin roots appear on the convex part, this means that the plant is ready for planting in a permanent container.

Begonia prefers loose and nutritious soil with a slightly acidic reaction. It is advisable to purchase soil in a flower shop, or you can create the necessary mixture with your own hands: leaf or sod soil, coarse sand, peat are mixed in a ratio of 3: 1: 1. It is recommended to treat the soil with a fungicide before planting.

In addition to planting tubers, ampelous begonia can be grown from cuttings and from seeds, you can learn more about this here.

Tuberous plant transplant

The ampelous begonia is transplanted only when necessary: the pot has become small or there are problems with the root system. The transplant is carried out in early spring.

  1. The plant is carefully removed from the old container, the roots are cleaned of the old substrate, treated with potassium permanganate or fungicide, and decayed parts are cut off.
  2. The new container is not completely filled with soil, a plant is placed in it and sprinkled with earth.
  3. The transplanted begonia should be watered frequently, and direct sunlight should also be avoided.

Important! When choosing a flower pot, you should stop at a shallow but wide container. A prerequisite is the presence of a drainage hole for the drain of excess water.

It is also necessary to think over in advance the location of the future plant, since it may be necessary to attach fastening systems for the container in order to ensure that the stems of the ampelous begonia can freely fall.

How to take care at home?

Caring for the plant is easy to carry out.

In the warm season, begonias need regular abundant watering in order for the plant to have enough strength to feed such a large mass of flowers. In no case should the roots be allowed to dry out - this threatens the death of the plant.

In winter, watering should be moderate, after the top layer of soil in the pot dries. The preferred type of watering is along the edges of the pot or into the pan: the plant reacts negatively to the ingress of water into the tubers.

When determining the "place of residence" of begonia, it is necessary to avoid its location near heating devices and batteries: they dry the foliage of the plant and the upper layer of the soil, while the lower layers have not yet had time to dry out. As a result, the roots of the flower rot.

Top dressing

In order for begonia to bloom for a long time and abundantly, it is necessary to start feeding it from early spring: first with nitrogen fertilizers for a set of deciduous mass, and after the release of the first flowers - with complex fertilizers for flowering plants, which can be purchased in specialized flower shops. MYou can fertilize begonia with organic fertilizers 2-3 times during the entire summer period.

Before fertilizing, the begonia should be watered well to avoid scalding the root system!

Pinching begonias is a way to achieve the decorative effect of the bush by forming the crown of the chosen shape.

Attention! This process takes place before flowering or after - in spring or autumn.

Having found the top growth point on the main stem, you need to pinch it off by 1-2 cm. Result - active growth of lateral shoots will begin in 2-3 weeks., which will give splendor to the bush and form the necessary shape.

Outdoor cultivation

In early spring, after preliminary "hardening", the ampelous begonia can be planted in open ground, which should be loose and well fertilized with organic fertilizers (for example, mullein).

During the entire spring-summer period, top dressing should be continued, but with complex fertilizers. The flower must be watered systematically, while avoiding stagnant moisture. The best time of day to water is morning.

With the first frost, after the dying off of the ground part of the plant, the tubers are dug up, are cleaned of soil and placed in dry peat. This container is stored until spring indoors, the average temperature in which reaches + 5C - + 12C.

Possible problems

  • The leaves turn yellow and dry up, the shoots stretch out unnaturally, the flowers fade. There are several possible reasons for this phenomenon: perhaps there is not enough light, nutrients, space in the pot. Accordingly, if you change the location of the basket or container, transplant the plant into a large container, feed with mineral and organic fertilizers (depending on the season), then with a high degree of probability you can hope to save the begonias.
  • New begonia leaves are small. It is enough to feed the plant with complex fertilizers.
  • Begonia leaves are dry, lethargic, twisted. There is not enough moisture, it is urgent to water the plant.
  • Begonia leaves turned yellow and wilted. Too much moisture, it is necessary to allow the soil to dry out. It is possible that the plant is “frozen”. Then the flower must be transferred to a warmer place.
  • Rot at the base of the stems. The reason is waterlogging. It is important to allow the plant to dry out. It is also necessary to urgently adjust the irrigation scheme.
  • Rot on leaves and flowers. This problem occurs when spraying begonias from above. This cannot be done!

Diseases and pests

Gray rot, powdery mildew, leaf rot are all fungal diseases that are treated by removing damaged parts and treating the entire plant, soil and pot walls with fungicide solutions.

Important! The most dangerous for begonias are aphids and spider mites.

Onions are effective against them: 15 g of chopped onions are insisted in one liter of water for 5 to 7 days, then the plants are filtered and sprayed every five to seven days until the pests disappear completely. You can also use special preparations sold in specialized stores.

As mentioned above, begonia is a very grateful plant. The abundance of spectacular colorful flowers will fill the house with coziness and beauty. Is this not a worthy reward for the grower for the care and attention that he gave to the plant?
