Gloxinia is a low-growing herb native to Brazil. This flower is popular among modern florists for its variety of shades.

Some species of this plant delight with their flowering all year round. Bright bell flowers will be a wonderful interior decoration.

Growing gloxinia at home requires proper care and certain knowledge. One of the first points is the choice of soil for the flower.

What kind of land is needed for an indoor flower?

The plant is very demanding on the soil. For gloxinia, special ready-made soil mixtures are perfect, such as "Violet", "Begonia" or "Saintpaulia", the main component of which is peat. The seed flower can be grown in special peat tablets.

Important! The land for transplantation must be sterilized. Thanks to this, harmful microorganisms and pests are destroyed, because of which the flower can get sick.

You can learn about diseases and pests of gloxinia, as well as methods of dealing with them, from this article.

Soil disinfection methods:

  1. Freezing. This must be done two times.
  2. Cultivation of the land with potassium permanganate. The soil is poured with a hot solution (1 teaspoon of manganese per liter of water) potassium permanganate and allowed to dry. This option can be called the cheapest and most effective.
  3. With the help of fungicidal agents.
  4. Calcination. The soil is kept in the oven for 15-20 minutes at a temperature of 90-100 degrees. If the temperature is higher, the ground will deteriorate.
  5. Steaming in a water bath. This procedure is done for two hours.

Properties that the soil should have:

  • nutritional value;
  • ease;
  • ability to retain moisture and breathability.

Self-preparation of the soil, its composition

If there is no ready-made soil, you can prepare it yourself:

  • leaf humus-2 parts;
  • meadow chernozem-2 parts;
  • peat-1 part;
  • gray river sand-1 part.

Reference! The optimum acidity of the substrate is from 6 to 7 pH. If the soil is acidic, the growth of gloxinia will slow down, and the buds will appear rarely.

Read about why gloxinia does not bloom and how to make it release buds, read our material.

The soil can be mixed with a hydrogel that works like a sponge. During watering, moisture absorption and swelling occurs. And then, as the surrounding soil dries up, it gradually gives off what it has absorbed. It is a fine granule and is sold as a dry concentrate. To use it, you need to fill it with water or complex fertilizers and wait a few hours. The resulting jelly-like pieces are mixed with the ground at the rate of 1 to 2.

You can add humus or rotted manure to the mixture - 50 g per liter of finished soil.

The correct pot

When choosing a pot, you should start from the size of the tubers. If they are small, you can use plastic cups. For medium, dishes with a diameter of 7-1 cm are suitable, for adults 10-15 cm. The pots should be wide and deep. Both earthenware and plastic dishes will work.

How to transplant?

In late February and early March, the dormant state of gloxinia ends (you can find out about the features of wintering gloxinia here). Spring is the best time to transplant a plant. Small shoots begin to appear on the tubers. They are taken out of the ground, washed with clean water and examined. If there is rot on the tubers, it is cut off with a knife, and the cuts are sprinkled with crushed coal.

To prevent rotting, the tubers are soaked in a solution of foundationol, phytosporin or other fungicidal agent. A dark pink solution of potassium permanganate is also suitable. Then the tubers are dried within 24 hours.

A depression is made in the soil two-thirds of the height of the tuber. The earth is slightly moistened and covered with a film. The pot is placed in a warm and bright place. The tubers are ventilated for half an hour in the morning and in the evening. When the first pair of leaves appears, the film is removed, the earth is poured, covering the tuber.

Important! With each transplant of gloxinia, the soil is changed.

How to fill a pot of substrate before planting gloxinia:

  1. The first and bottom layer is drainage, the thickness of which should be at least 1-2 cm.
  2. Next comes the soil mixture. Its amount depends on the size of the tuber. From above, it should remain open.

It is necessary to water the plant as the soil dries up, pouring water into the pan or along the edge of the pot. This is done with settled water, the temperature of which is two degrees higher than room temperature. This is necessary for the quick absorption of moisture by the roots and reducing the risk of decay of the root system. There should be no drafts in the room where the flower stands.

Important! Excessive dampness can harm the flower. Watering is reduced in rainy, cloudy and cold weather. At this time, the soil dries out poorly.

When blooming, gloxinia requires special attention. During this period, the flower needs high humidity, the air is humidified by spraying around the plant.

How to properly water and feed gloxinia so that it blooms for a long time, read here.

Top dressing

Gloxinia is fed once every ten days. Top dressing begins when the plant comes out of dormancy and an shoot develops from the tuber. Discontinued in mid-August. Fertilizers are applied one hour after the main watering along the edges of the pot, avoiding contact with the leaves and the growing point.

You can prepare plant food yourself... To do this, take 10 liters of water:

  • 10g. simple superphosphate;
  • 0.1g. ferric chloride;
  • 0.004g. copper sulfate;
  • 0.07g. boric acid;
  • 10g. potassium chloride;
  • 4d. ammonium nitrate;
  • 5d. magnesium sulfate;
  • 0.05g. manganese sulfate;
  • 0.008g. zinc sulfate.

Growing gloxinia is not easy. However, with due diligence and adherence to all the rules, beauties will delight with just magical flowering. And most importantly, do not forget about feeding the plant.
