Hilling is an important process that is necessary for high yields as well as protecting potatoes. It turns out that if you do this incorrectly, you can harm the plants.

An important role here is played by adaptations, of which there are many now. In this article, we will analyze the most popular and effective ones.

We will tell you what their principle of work is, how and in what type of work you can use them, how to do them yourself. We will also show you some tips on how to make this process less time-consuming.

General recommendations

Hilling is stress for the root system of any crop. For, in order not to harm the plants, it is recommended:

  • carry out the procedure in the early morning or late evening;
  • shed earth abundantly the day before hilling;
  • pull out or cut (if the area is large) weeds, they can be left between the beds to protect the plantings from the sun and retain moisture;
  • after completion, it is advisable to arrange abundant watering.

Read more about why you need to huddle potatoes and why after it the yield increases, read here, and from this article you will learn about the various methods of hilling.

How to spud potatoes?

With a hoe, a hoe, a shovel

The most ancient and difficult way, requiring physical training and some skill. The tool should have a wide working surface and a sharpened edge.

Hilling potatoes is done from all sides according to the following instructions:

  1. We start work in one direction, that is, first we go through all the rows on one side, and then proceed to the opposite.
  2. At the end of each row we make a small embankment so that moisture remains in the aisle.
  3. We repeat the procedure about once every three weeks.

Manual mechanical disc hiller

The hiller consists of two metal discs, which are directed at an angle to each other, tapering on one side. It will take two people to work. One will pull the mechanism, and the second will direct and press on it. The row fits between the discs. By pressing them into the ground and moving the unit, you can huddle a whole row in one pass. The process is very simple and saves a lot of time. The unit can be purchased at gardening stores, its cost is about three thousand rubles.

Plow

The hand plow allows a person to process one side of each of the adjacent rows in one row spacing. Unlike a mechanical disc hiller, one worker is enough.

The tool consists of a frame or stand to which a pruning knife, a wheel and a pull rod are attached.

Making a plow with your own hands is quite simple, for this it is enough to have the following materials:

  • meter metal pipe with a diameter of one inch for the manufacture of a rack;
  • 1/3 or 2/3 inch pipe for draft;
  • lanyard to change the angle of inclination of the plow;
  • steel sheet with a thickness of at least 2 mm for the manufacture of dumps;
  • a wheel with a fork placed at the front of the structure (a wheel from a medium bike is ideal).

To collect the structure you will need:

  • Bulgarian;
  • blowtorch;
  • welding machine;
  • a sledgehammer or special pipe bending tool.

Self-made plow:

  1. To make a double-plow plow yourself, you need to give the steel plates semicircular bends, and then weld them to the rack.
  2. The joint of the two parts and the rack must be even, for this it is carefully sanded with a grinder.
  3. Then a tip or trimming knife is made, which is necessary for the plow to cut into the ground. It is sharpened at a 45-degree angle to give it a sharp edge, then welded to the bottom of the rack and sanded.

If there is no desire to engage in the manufacture of a plow on your own, then it can be purchased at any farm store at a price of about three thousand rubles. A well-made plow can last for several decades.

The working process itself is as follows: the farmer pushes the structure, the plow cuts the ground, and thanks to the side blades, distributes the loosened soil to the root part of the potato in two adjacent rows.

Cultivator

A motor cultivator is a fairly inexpensive automatic solution for a gardener. Suitable only for loosening the soil with a milling cutter, weeding and for hilling in the aisle. It makes sense to use only on small areas up to 0.5 hectares with light soil.

The principle of operation of the cultivator is as follows:

  1. First, using a cutter, the soil is loosened.
  2. Then, in the second pass, the milling cutter is changed to a plow and hilling is carried out.

Motoblock

Motoblock is a fairly expensive tool, which has its pros and cons. Its main advantage is its versatility: you can both loosen the ground, huddle, and harvest. An additional plus is the speed of processing and saving your time.

The disadvantages include its high cost and a higher percentage of damaged tubers than in cases with hand tools.

There are manual and industrial options. Industrial ones allow you to process several rows of potatoes in one pass, which saves gasoline and time.

Important! The use of a walk-behind tractor must be foreseen even at the landing stage. Potato rows should be even with a fixed distance between rows and bushes in them. To do this, it is recommended to pull the nylon thread over the rows and mark the field before planting the seedlings.

The principle of operation is simple: disc wheels or a milling cutter are installed forward, which loosen the soil, and a plow is placed at the back, which rakes the soil onto the bushes.

It is recommended to carry out hilling in one direction, as well as it is important to choose the optimal knife depth so as not to damage the roots.

Another tool

There are other tools for loosening the earth and hilling potato bushes, the most famous of them are:

  • ripper "Tornado";
  • swivel forks;
  • shovel Prokopenko and others.

If you go deeper into the process, you can find several dozen more solutions from folk craftsmen, but it is always better to use the already well-proven methods of hilling.

Conclusion

We examined the basic tools for hilling, as well as the process of working with them. Of course, the choice of means is determined individually, depending on the size and location of the site, the types of soil and the purpose of planting. We hope that our article will help you in choosing the right solution.
