In order for the suburban area to meet all the expectations of the owners, its competent design will be required. This is the kind of place where we want to take a break from the noisy city and work in the garden and garden beds.

How to equip your plot of land so that everything is comfortable, rational and cozy? This is some kind of science. And you must first understand the basics of proper design, before you start to ennoble your territory.

Where does it all start?

The secret to the success of any business is in the right approach.

In our case, before planning something at the summer cottage (and the plans, as usual, are Napoleonic), you need to assess the possibilities.

That is, to begin with, we have to make an analysis of our territory - what we actually have?

After a step-by-step assessment of the holdings, we can start planning the site - where what will be located.

Here, the mind gives way to fantasy: the house itself is better to build here in this part of the territory, there is a flower garden nearby, and a little further - an orchard. And this is not all that I would like to place on the site!

But before designing, you need to make an assessment of the territory, taking into account several factors.

Suburban area valuation factors

Terrain relief... If your land is distinguished by relief features, this must be taken into account. A steep slope is not the best solution for building a house. And the height difference can be used for an alpine slide and a waterfall. The landscape design takes into account all the features of the relief.

Plot shape... Your land plot can have a different shape - geometric in the form of a standard square or rectangle, rounded, elongated, reminiscent of the letter G, T or P. Naturally, the layout of the site will be different, because you need to rationally use the entire territory, do not forget about the farthest corners.

Site soil... Why find out information about soil type and its acidity? This is important for choosing the plants that you intend to grow in your area. Often land cultivation is required - the order of natural soil, the delivery of peat or black soil, the introduction of fertilizers in the places of future planting of plants.

In the local district administration, you can get acquainted with a special map containing information about the soil of land allotments. Specialized laboratories can help with soil composition analysis. Some owners of suburban areas, as they say, have a mustache himself. They have the skills to analyze the soil on their own.

Groundwater level.

This is an important factor in evaluating your site and indicating the need for drainage.

Where can I get this information?

At the request of citizens, it is issued by the departments of architecture and urban planning of settlements.

There is also another option. In summer, in dry weather, it is necessary to drill 3 - 4 wells of 2 meters depth on the territory. The water level in them is checked after a week. The drainage system will have to be equipped if the distance between the soil level and the water is less than 1 meter.

Wind characteristics... Windy weather is harmful to some garden plants. Each area is characterized by winds of a certain direction and speed. You can find out by contacting your local meteorological service. Perhaps the future garden will need protection from blowing, and this must be taken into account when planning the territory.

Illumination of the site... How are your properties located in relation to the cardinal points? Where are the most illuminated places, and where are the shady ones? All this must be clarified in advance in order to plan the placement of buildings, planting plants, arrangement of recreation areas.

Summer cottage styles

The summer cottage is your fiefdom, there is a place for your imagination and creativity to roam. You can even come up with your own design style. But, if you are not a design expert, then the result is difficult to predict. Maybe it's better to find out what the main planning styles are?

Regular (geometric) style

The essence of the style is in its name - landscape objects are arranged strictly geometrically, as if they are aligned under a ruler. It is well suited for areas where the terrain is flat. Plants planted in a square pattern, in the form of a circle, rectangle, rhombus, in a checkerboard pattern look neat.

The style is characterized by symmetry - when on both sides of the main axis there are landscape attributes in the form of flower beds, ponds, garden sculptures, benches.

Landscape style (picturesque)

This style is characterized by more freedom and naturalness. Paths can be winding, ponds, flower beds and even garden beds - curly.

The picturesque style is appropriate in areas with uneven relief - elevation differences, streams, ravines.

Mixed style

And the peculiarity of this style is the combination of severity and freedom. In it, a combination of techniques characteristic of both the regular style and the pictorial one is permissible. The style is suitable if the territory has a varied relief.

Site design plan

The site plan (taken from the BTI) must be transferred to graph paper.

The optimal scale is 1 in 100.

Then you should divide the field into squares.

The size of each is 1x1 cm, which corresponds to 1 square meter of territory.

Now start drawing on paper and cutting out all the objects of your site - a house, a bathhouse, a garage, a gazebo, a garden, an alpine slide, and so on. Place all these figures on the plan and move them, choosing the optimal location.

Decide on the location of your summer cottage relative to the cardinal points... Planting plants should be planned on the south side. The plan diagram will become more visual if you glue volumetric paper figures and sculpt part of the landscape attributes from plasticine.

Why spend so much effort on developing a plan yourself if you are going to invite specialists to improve your site? And in order to communicate with them more substantively and monitor their work.

As a result, a master plan is drawn up, which includes:

  • the location of all buildings on the site: a house, a garage, a bathhouse, a barn, a gazebo;
  • landscaping scheme;
  • placement of garden paths;
  • the presence of a drainage system;
  • lighting of the territory;
  • water bodies - pool, pond, stream;
  • an estimate with the calculation of the cost of each type of work.

Below are some noteworthy design projects for summer cottages. It is useful to get acquainted with them, and suddenly you want to borrow some of the design details you like.

We walked through the main points of planning suburban areas. Let this help make your summer cottage a pleasant and comfortable place.
