Fleas are among the pests known to mankind since ancient times. Nothing prevents these wingless insects from conquering huge distances.

They jump well and move with ease on potential carriers, such as dogs or birds, at any distance.

Fleas feed on blood, which increases their level of danger to humans, they are able to carry serious diseases. And their varieties are directly related to the one on whom they live. More on this later in the article.

Differences

Fleas are not as simple as they seem at first glance. Outwardly, representatives of different species are practically indistinguishable. The human eye sees only a small dark dot that disappears from sight as soon as someone tries to catch it. It is impossible to trace her movement... The tiny bloodsucker jumps high.

More than 2 thousand species of fleas are known. Among them, the most common:

  • human;
  • clothes or bedding;
  • feline;
  • doggy;
  • rat;
  • chicken.

Almost every genus of mammals has its own parasite. Fleas, household fleas, or bed fleas are more likely to live in folds of clothing, fill up space in bed, or hide in carpets and walkways.

Fleas are white only at the larval stage. Then they have a worm-like shape. Flea larvae are not yet able to bite and drink blood... Therefore, while growing up, they live closer to organic remains.

In addition to the above species of fleas, there are earthen and grass fleas. From our materials you will learn what kind of insects they are and how to deal with them, as well as how to detect and get rid of parasites of a parrot and a hamster.

Human

A person can be bitten by a cat, dog or any other flea if the parasite is hungry and the person is nearby. Almost 1.5 thousand species of these parasites can potentially choose a person for the role of a victim. But there are real human fleas... Their main source of food is human blood.

REFERENCE: Insects do not live permanently on their direct host, as many are used to thinking. They just jump in to eat. More often they are in motion.

Human flea size is about 3mm... This is a lot compared to the size of other relatives. With such dimensions, the bloodsucker conquers a distance of up to 50 cm in length. It can be found on those parts of the body where there is the most hair. This feature is similar to the habitat of lice.

Human flea

Bed or clothing

Bed, linen, clothing fleas are one of the subspecies, which are classified not so much by the features of their structure, but by their habitat.

These insects have a powerful chitinous cover and a body flattened from the sides.... That is why they are not so easy to kill.

They are dark brown in color and do not exceed 3 mm in length. This species has very developed hind limbs, which allows for truly giant jumps.

In modern apartments, they can live not only in linen and clothes, but also in carpets, bedding of pets, in furniture and behind baseboards (for details on where fleas come from in an apartment and how to distinguish them from other parasites, read here). Fleas are active at any time of the day, after saturation they wait for some time in the folds of bed linen or clothes.

Dangerous because can cause persistent allergic reactions and are carriers of two hundred diseases, of various degrees of danger to humans (you can find out more about whether fleas are dangerous to humans and what diseases they carry here).

Clothes or bed fleas

Feline

Considered the most common species in Russia... They usually feed on the blood of cats. But hungry representatives of their species will not hesitate to dine on a dog. By jumping on people, they transmit dangerous diseases. The feline parasite, unlike the human parasite, once on the body, tries to bite on open and hairless areas.

The opinion is erroneous that if a cat has fleas, then they are harmless to humans. As you can see, the opposite is true. AND it is necessary to remove parasites not only from the fur of the animal, but also from the house (where do fleas come from in the house?).

REFERENCE: It is known that cat fleas do not live in animal fur. They jump in to eat and hide in secluded places near the food source. This could be skirting boards near the cat lounger, or a spot right in the bedding.

Cat fleas

Doggy

They are less common than felines, do not reproduce as quickly, but successfully infect all four-legged animals that come their way. Like all other pests, canine parasites have a flattened body and dark color.

Under the microscope, too long hind legs of an insect attract attention. It is they who provide jumping at a distance that exceeds the size of the parasite a hundred times.

REFERENCE: The oldest jumping insect was found in fossilized amber, which is more than 55 million years old.

Dog fleas successfully hunt humans... This is especially true when the animal is heavily infected. Pets can pick up the pest from an infected dog while walking, from a cat, or a rat, and even from a person whom the parasite used for "transportation."

Dog fleas

Rat

Distinguish between European and southern representatives of this species. The first ones live on the wool of domestic rodents. Parasitizes rats and mice in European countries. They are known to carry the rat tapeworm and the plague.

Southern congeners are some of the most dangerous in the world. First by biting a rat and then a person, the insect transmits mouse typhus and bubonic plague.

Rat fleas

Chicken

All members of the chicken family suffer from these parasites. With severe infestation, pests able to bring the bird to exhaustion... It is especially hard for the young generation from bloodsuckers. Therefore, it is necessary to breed insects in a timely manner, even before the birth of offspring.

Chicken fleas

Black fleas in the apartment

Black fleas are the generalized household name for all types of fleas that can inhabit human habitation. These include cat, dog, rat and bed fleas.

They can get into the house both with pets and on their own, for example, from an infected basement. They multiply quickly, live near a food source, carry diseases and cause allergies.

Black fleas

How to get rid of black fleas:

  1. Treat pets with special products.
  2. Clean your home thoroughly using a powerful vacuum cleaner to reduce the number of eggs in carpets and furniture.
  3. Heat the clothes and bed linen, curtains and rugs.

    Insects die at temperatures from +50 degrees. Low temperatures, from -15 degrees, are also fatal for them.

  4. Treat the apartment with insecticides, paying special attention to possible flea habitats:
    • skirting boards;
    • furniture;
    • walls 1-1.5 meters from the floor.

All disinfection work must be carried out in one day. When finished, provide pets with special collars to prevent re-infestation.

Different types of blood-sucking insects are subtly different from each other. They have a slightly different location of body parts. They jump at different distances and also differ in color. But given the tiny size, it is impossible to see the details with the naked eye. If a person is bitten by fleas, only an entomologist can tell which species they belong to.

Parasites reproduce in the same way, scattering eggs wherever they are.

Any flea can bite a person... Together with blood particles, it carries dangerous diseases from animals. You should especially beware of rat parasites.

No one is immune from infection. Therefore, it is important to carry out preventive measures - to regularly check the pet's coat, to remove blood-sucking pests in a timely manner.
