The tomato tree has long been grown in South America. In countries of temperate climates, tomato trees grew, perhaps, only in botanical gardens. This was until 1985, when the Japanese breeder Nozawa Shigeo presented the Octopus f1 hybrid at the EXPO.

The variety made a splash. In the article we will tell you everything about Octopus tomatoes, how to grow them in a small area.

Miracle tree

Octopus f1 is a perennial (up to 15 years old) indeterminate hybrid that does not stop the growth of the main stem, forming many brushes.

It grows up to 5 meters in height. Forms a crown with a diameter of up to 50 square meters. 5-6 tomatoes ripen on one brush, weighing about 150 g.

Leaves are oval. The flowers are white and pink. Fruits are elongated, of different shades: red, yellow, orange. The pulp is characterized by juiciness, aroma, sweetish taste.

The introductory video, which is presented below, will help you better get acquainted with the scale of the Octopus F1 tomato tree.

Tomato is good in vegetable cocktails, sauces and dressings. The fruits are suitable for canning, long-term storage, making tomato juices.
There are special reserves where tourists are allowed to get better acquainted with this variety of Octopus tomatoes. How to grow them outdoors, in conventional greenhouses, on balconies and loggias, in industrial hydroponic greenhouses?

The average gardener-gardener does not have greenhouses suitable in size for long-term cultivation of a real tree, there is no way to work with hydroponic solutions.

For most hobbyists, the option of growing a hybrid in one season in an ordinary greenhouse or open field is suitable. Technologies of using effective biofertilizers will help to grow a decent harvest.

We start with seedlings

It is better not to experiment with this variety of tomatoes, but to use only purchased tomato seeds octopus f1. The cultivation technology is quite simple and below we will consider it in detail:

  1. We carry out disinfection and soaking of the hybrid variety in the traditional way for all tomatoes.
  2. Sowing dates for seedlings are from late January to mid-February. Seedlings germinate at a temperature of + 20-25 °. Seedlings need additional lighting and heating.
  3. We dive into large containers.
  4. We transplant into open ground from May to mid-June. We transplant in the phase of 5-7 leaves, with a seedling height of up to 30 cm. In warm regions, it is possible to plant seeds directly into the ground.

Choosing a place

Tomato trees can be grown outdoors in garden beds, but are best grown in barrels or boxes.

  1. It will take a barrel with a volume of at least two hundred liters... You can take a wooden box or a thick plastic bag.
  2. To remove excess water, knock out the bottom of the barrel. According to the 20 by 20 cm scheme, we make centimeter holes in the walls. They will provide oxygen access to the root system.
  3. We install it on the sunny side.
  4. Pour in 10 cm layers a mixture of equal parts of land, turf and biofertilizer.
  5. We make a mound by pouring a bucket of fertile soil. We plant the strongest bush of seedlings, with pre-cut off to heal the wounds, lower leaves and stepsons.
  6. We fall asleep with another ten-centimeter layer of the soil mixture. Cover with foil until frost stops.
  7. As the shoot grows 10 cm, sprinkle with soil to the lower leaves. We repeat the procedure until the landing tank is completely filled.

Before filling the drum with earth, place a rubber hose with several slots in it. Close the end of the hose at the bottom tightly. Connect the pump from the outside.

Pump air twice a week to improve ventilation.

Cooking biocompost

You can buy ready-made biocompost, but it is better to prepare the mixture yourself:

  1. To obtain biocompost (urgas) at home use a bucket or similar container.
  2. We fix the grate not high from the bottom.
  3. We lay the walls with plastic bags with holes at the bottom. We put all food waste in the dishes prepared in this way.
  4. For 10 kg, add 1 kg of soil and sawdust.
  5. Stir until the mixture becomes loose, homogeneous in consistency.
  6. The resulting mixture in layers we spray with a biological product Baikal EM1.
  7. Prepare a solution of 100 ml of the drug in a bucket of water, with the addition of liquid sweet jam without fruit. We accumulate in large bags by placing a load on top.
  8. We support moisture content of the mixture is about 50-60%... The mixture will mature in two weeks, then dry the mixture.

The compost should not contain bones, grease, plastic or synthetic waste.

Not a day without care

During the summer, it is recommended to fulfill simple requirements.

  1. We put tomatoes until the barrel is completely filled with soil mixture. In the future, do not pinch the stepsons and buds. You can familiarize yourself with the scheme of pinching tomatoes in a greenhouse here.
  2. By the middle of summer, we provide whips and brushes with support. Before that, they can hang freely and even creep along the ground.
  3. Maintain soil moisture at 60%. To do this, we carry out loosening and mulching. Water it 2-3 times a week with warm water.
  4. We feed, starting in July, 2-3 times a week with a mash made from biocompost. We make a chatterbox like this: fill the container 1/3 with mixed soil and biocompost in equal amounts. Fill with standing water to the top. We insist the solution for a day.
  5. We feed the tomato tree with solutions of mineral or organic fertilizers at the same time as watering.
  6. When the fruits of the first brush ripen, remove the leaves. We repeat the operation when the tomatoes begin to turn brown on the second brush.
  7. Old, wilted, starting to turn yellow leaves must be eliminated throughout the growing season.
  8. Water with a weak aqueous solution of iodine for prophylaxis.

The same rules are followed when growing a tree in a heated greenhouse in the traditional way, outdoors in a garden bed.

On the balcony

A small fruiting tree can be grown on the balcony. You can plant a hybrid all year round, but preferably in the spring. We plant it by deepening it by one and a half centimeters. We water, cover. We plant seedlings in separate containers. We place it on the insulated loggia, on the southern windowsill.

We mulch with moss, expanded clay, sawdust. As we grow older, we transplant it into a shallow, wide pot. Water with a solution with top dressing through a pallet every 2 weeks.

In winter, we reduce watering, do not apply fertilizers.

Klondike for the farmer

Year-round industrial cultivation of the tomato tree is only possible in large hydroponic greenhouses. Greenhouses must be constantly heated and have a continuous lighting system.

The method is costly, but the result is worth it - the tomato tree is not susceptible to diseases and gives a fantastic yield of one and a half tons or more.

The sequence of work can be as follows:

  1. We equip the greenhouse: we install a compressor, lighting lamps with an optimal spectrum. We purchase glass wool, containers, components for hydroponics, devices for monitoring the concentration and composition of a hydroponic solution.
  2. We make glass wool cubes for seedlings (20x20x10 cm), soak with a hydroponic solution. You can use a ready-made solution, or you can use a home-made solution.
  3. Cut out the indentations in cubes, lay the seeds. We immerse the cubes up to half in the solution poured into the trays. We moisten them with a nutrient solution and place them in small trays filled with the same solution, so that the cube is half in the solution. With the same solution, we constantly moisten the upper surface of the cube.
  4. After two months, we transplant the most well-fed sprout with 5-7 leaves in a large (50x50x30 cm) fiberglass cube. We connect the cube with tubes to the aerator. As the roots grow, in a checkerboard pattern we add tubes for air supply after 30-40 cm.
  5. We put the cube in a prepared container with a solution. The height of the container with the solution should be at least 50 cm, and the area should be about one and a half meters. The container should be black inside and filled with a hydroponic solution 30-35 cm. Close the container with the solution with a black foam lid with a hole for growth. The black color prevents unicellular algae from multiplying in the nutrient solution.
  6. Since October, we provide the hybrid with 12 hours of daylight hours with the help of lamps. We turn off artificial lighting in February.
  7. We form the trunk for the first 7-8 months. We install the trellis with a height of 3 m. Pull the net horizontally over the trellis. When the trunk grows, we carefully lay out the shoots on it, orienting in different directions. We pinch the main stem when it exceeds the height of the grid. We are not stepchild. Until complete formation, we cut off the flowers. The timing of the formation and ripening of fruits in the Octopus should coincide with the spring-summer period.
  8. Once a day, or every other day, we supply air to the roots.
  9. We maintain the temperature of the nutrient solution in the summer not higher than + 25 °, in winter the temperature of the solution should not be lower than + 19 °.
  10. Constantly, every week, we check the composition of the nutrient solution. When the concentration of the components of the solution changes, the entire solution must be changed. If the concentration of the solution is increased, dilute the solution with water. If the concentration of the solution is lowered, add the mother liquor in the required quantities.

The agrotechnology of growing a five-meter tomato tree in open ground or in an ordinary greenhouse is, of course, impossible. But with proper care, Octopus f1, cultivated as an annual, can please with a very decent harvest.

With patience, courage and finances, you can try the hydroponic method and grow a giant tomato tree. We hope this review helped you get more information about Octopus tomatoes, growing them both in a greenhouse and on a windowsill. Don't be afraid to experiment!
