Choosing potato varieties is not an easy task. You need to take into account your taste preferences, and the ripeness time, conditions at the storage site, the type of soil on the site.
A good solution in the mid-early group would be a successful product of Belarusian breeders - Breeze.
A full description of the variety, features of potato Breeze agricultural technology, its tendency to disease, as well as the possibility of being damaged by insect pests, can be found in our article.
Origin
The breeze was bred by the specialists of the Scientific Center of the Academy of Sciences of Belarus for potato growing. In 2005 it was patented and transferred for variety testing. Just a year later, Breeze was included in the Belarusian, and in 2009 - in the Russian register of potato varieties, grown in different countries.

TO merits Breeze varieties include:
- high keeping quality;
- pleasant sweetish taste;
- attractive appearance of tubers;
- resistance to viral diseases
(leaf curling, striped and wrinkled mosaics) and potato crayfish (Synchytrium endobioticum fungus).
The main limitations:
- susceptibility to golden nematode;
- low resistance to late blight and scab.
We can also note a low boiling point, but this, as they say, is a matter of taste.
Cultivation, reproduction and storage
Potatoes are planted when the ground warmed up to 7 ° С at a depth of 10–12 cm. This usually occurs by the end of April - beginning of May.
To the soil breeze undemanding, which allows you to grow this variety in all regions of the Russian Federation.
Adequate watering will help you get a decent harvest in any soil. Planting density should vary from 550 tubers per hundred square meters for light, to 400 - for heavier, loamy soils.
Breeze potatoes grow best on irrigated beds.
This variety responds well to the application of mineral fertilizers. It is better to give preference superphosphate or ammonium sulfate to maintain optimal soil pH. Read about how and when to feed potatoes, as well as how to do it correctly when planting, in the articles of our website.
Like any potato variety, Breeze can propagate vegetatively (parts of the tuber, seedlings, branches, dividing the bush) and seeds.
With the vegetative method, it is possible to get a bountiful harvest faster, but after 4–5 years (reproductions), the yield decreases, and the taste of potatoes begins to deteriorate.
To update the planting material, you need to periodically purchase new seed tubers.
Planting seeds allows you to get a harvest from small nodules in the first year, from which it will grow in the second year great potatoes first reproduction.
Breeze potatoes are different good keeping quality, its tubers are resistant to mechanical damage. Special storage conditions are not required, a dry basement with an air temperature of +2 to + 5 ° C is suitable. For more information about storage in winter, in boxes and terms, read the materials on the site.
Diseases and pests
The breeze is out resistant to viral and some fungal diseases (verticillosis, alternaria, fusarium). It is less susceptible to such dangerous diseases as late blight and scab than some other varieties, but still requires preventive measures.
Apply organic fertilizers carefully! This is one of the most common routes for scab-causing actinomycete spores!
Late blight considered the most insidious of nightshade diseases. The disease is caused by a pathogenic fungus, respectively, treatment with fungicides is required to prevent it.
It is categorically impossible to use material with signs of the disease for planting. An important preventive measure is regular weeding.
Scab potatoes can destroy up to 70% of the crop in affected areas by increasing waste and reducing keeping quality.
Seed material is also lost, as the surviving tubers lose their eyes. To combat scab, apply:
- dressing seed tubers with fungicides (Fungazil 100 SL, Aquaflo, etc.);
- the introduction of fertilizers that support the slightly acidic reaction of the soil;
- crop rotation with planting of legumes, cereals or cruciferous crops in place of potatoes.
The ripening time of the Breeze tubers makes it susceptible to attack by the golden potato nematode.
As a result of the parasitism of this microscopic worm on the roots and leaves of potatoes, the tubers do not tie or remain very small, the greens dry out. The nematode forms cysts in which the eggs can live for up to 10 years.
To prevent infection, you need to thoroughly rinse the seed tubers, immediately dig up and burn the affected plants. You can use drugs such as heterophos or urea... Planting corn or legumes helps clear the ground of nematodes!
Good yield, decent taste, minimum requirements for chemical protection and storage make Breeze a worthy representative of mid-early varieties both in a small summer cottage and on a farm.
We also invite you to get acquainted with other varieties that have a wide variety of ripening periods:
