High yield, good taste, disease resistance - all these are the characteristics of the Alvara potato variety.
The variety was bred by German breeders - brothers Frank and Winfried Lange.
Both brothers were educated at the University of Giessen in Frankfurt, after which they defended their doctoral dissertations: Winfried - on phytopathology, Frank - on plant biotechnology.
When breeding the Alvara variety, the goal was to develop new mid-early varietywhich will have better characteristics than the old Desiree.
In 1975, two mother tubers were crossed and, after 10 years of stepwise selection, one root crop was selected that passed all the tests. In 1985, Alvara was registered in the German plant variety register.
In Russia, this variety gains everything every year. great popularity, due to its ability to yield crops on any, even unprofitable, soil.

|Yield||295-440 c / ha|
|Consumer qualities||good taste|

|Originator||Saatzucht Fritz Lange KG (Germany)|
The mid-early variety ripens 70 - 80 days after planting, does not degenerate, for which it is highly valued by farmers and gardeners. Tall bush with dense leaves, purple-red flowers, tubers are placed in the ground shallow, compact.
The number of tubers is large, they are all about the same size, correct oval shape, eyes are small, shallow. The pulp is yellow in color, good taste, with a starch content of 13-15%.
You can compare this indicator with other varieties using the data in the table below:
|Variety name||Starch content|
A visual photo gallery of Alvara potatoes:
The yield of the variety is 470 - 540 centners per hectare, marketability - up to 93%... Translated into the language of an ordinary gardener, the yield is about 500 kg of potatoes from one hundred square meters.
The variety is resistant to almost all types of diseases and viruses, including:
- Golden nematode.
Of the minuses - susceptibility to late blight in the upper, ground part of the bush. Tubers are more resistant to late blight.
Potatoes has excellent taste, is used both in everyday life and on an industrial scale.
The Alvara variety, having tubers of almost the same size and regular oval shape, is great for making chips, crackers. Root crops are processed into starch, dry puree.
Planting, growing and storage
Before planting tubers need to warm up a little, give them a heat boost, but make sure that the length of the germinated shoots does not exceed 2 - 3 cm, otherwise they may break off when laid in the ground.
Furrows, for better illumination, are made from south to north. The distance between the rows should be 65 - 75 cm, and between the tubers - about 35 cm.
Alvara potatoes very well stored, does not germinate, does not rot and retains its palatability until the next harvest. Too impoverished, infertile soils are recommended to be fertilized with peat, humus or chemical fertilizers. You can read about how and when to apply fertilizers and whether it is necessary to do this when planting in separate articles on our website.
To grow potatoes, it is very important to follow the correct agricultural practices and use the right additives to increase yields and get rid of pests.
We bring to your attention articles on why and how to use fungicides, herbicides and insecticides correctly.
The variety has proven itself high yield throughout Russia.
Alvara is not afraid of drought, frost and sudden changes in weather conditions. Soils on which you can plant potatoes of the Alvara variety:
- black soil;
- clay soil;
- sandy loam and even sand;
The keeping quality of this variety is 90%. You can see the keeping quality indicators for other varieties in the table below:
|Variety name||Keeping quality|
|Timo||96%, but tubers germinate early|
Diseases and pests
Dozens of pests can damage potatoes, but main enemy the Colorado potato beetle is considered.
Older individuals lay eggs on the leaves and stems of the plant. The hatched larvae are immediately taken for eating the bush. The Colorado potato beetle can destroy crops in a matter of days by eating the green parts of the bushes to the ground.
There are two ways to deal with a pest:
- Treatment of tubers before planting in a special solution that protects the culture for 40 - 60 days.
- The treatment of the stems with pesticides is already in the process of potato growth. When choosing the second method, it is necessary to carry out processing as soon as the larvae hatch.
We also suggest that you familiarize yourself with the materials on the use of folk remedies and chemicals to combat Colorado beetles. The most commonly used are the following:
The Alvara variety is resistant to diseases and pests, susceptible only to late blight, and all efforts must be made to fight against late blight.
Phytophthora is a plant disease caused by parasitic fungi, manifested by brown rot.
To beat the disease, it is recommended to germinate potatoes before planting, alternate planting potatoes with other crops, tillage.
In favorable weather for phytophthora reproduction (high humidity), it is necessary to process one of the following drugs or its analogues:
- Azocene 5%.
- Polycarbacin 80%.
- Copper oxychloride.
- Arcerid 60%.
You need to know that the last processing is carried out no earlier than 20 days before the start of the harvest.
If you want to breed a mid-early variety that yields a rich crop in any soil, disease resistant, then pay special attention to the German potato Alvar. For the climatic conditions of Russia, it is best suited.
