The reproduction of slugs on the site must be carefully limited, otherwise you can forget about the crops. Get rid of these nondescript molluscs completely will not work, because they easily crawl from neighboring gardens and orchards.

There are many ways to combat such pests, from manual collection of slugs to the use of chemicals.

Fighting slugs without chemistry, this is the kind that gardeners prefer. How it happens fighting slugs with folk remedies read this material.

Traditional methods

Folk remedies for fighting slugs have been tested for a long time and have high efficiency and do not harm plants and soil at all.

Many of them do not even harm the molluscs themselves, but simply scare them away from planting and reliably protect plants from damage. If slugs appear in the garden: how to deal with folk remedies?

Folk remedies for slugs let's list the best:

  • wood ash;
  • slaked lime;
  • salt;
  • soda and vinegar;
  • beer;
  • ammonia;
  • mustard;
  • needles;
  • finely crushed shells or shells;
  • aromatic plants.

All this must be used in conjunction with preventive measures. - timely loosening, weeding, thinning of plantings, cleaning of weeds and plant residues from the site. Fighting slugs in the garden with folk remedies will help to safely expel pests.

Wood ash

Fighting slugs in the country with folk remedies has its positive aspects. So, experienced summer residents use ash for fertilization, and to protect plants from various pests, including from gastropods, slugs bypass places sprinkled with ash, as it sticks to their bodies and interferes with movement.

It is necessary to carry out protective measures late at night, when the clams crawl out of their hiding places... They take clean dry ash and pour it along the beds, around the bushes, you can pollinate the plants themselves.

For greater efficiency slaked lime is added to the ash or tobacco dust in a 1: 1 ratio.

Both ash and lime lose their properties when wet, so the treatment of the site should be carried out in dry weather or after watering, when moisture is slightly absorbed into the soil.

About once a week, the ash treatment is repeateduntil fresh traces of the pests are gone. For the protection to be as effective as possible, you need to scatter the ash where the main paths of movement of the slugs are.

You can identify these paths by the shiny strips of dried mucus, which leave shellfish while driving.

Common table salt against many types of slugs is a very effective weapon. In the beds and flower beds, soil salinization is undesirable, but salt can be used safely on compost heaps.

Rotting plant debris attracts slugs from all over the site, and, sprinkle salt on the slime-marked paths on the compost heap, you can quickly get rid of them.

This should be done after sunset and in dry that the crystals do not dissolve from moisture.

Soda against slugs, often used by gardeners, they most often use non-food, and soda ash... Dry powder thickly sprinkle over clusters of slugs and individuals; under the influence of soda, naked mollusks die in a matter of minutes.

Instead of powder, you can use a soda solution: take 100 g of soda ash per bucket of water.

To spray plants, the amount of soda should be halved and add 20 g of laundry soap to the solution.

Vinegar against slugs is a very effective remedy. Slugs also die from table vinegar. You will need a bucket of water to prepare the solution. and 65 ml of 9% vinegar. The solution is sprayed on plant leaves and watered on clusters of pests.

During the processing of plantings, you need to ensure that so that the solution does not get under the roots... Often spraying with vinegar solution is impossible, as this harms the plants.

Mustard powder for plants is harmless, but slugs die from it, so mustard against pests is an effective remedy. You can sprinkle the soil around the bushes with dry powder, or you can spray the plantings with a solution.

It is prepared like this: 150 g of mustard powder is diluted in 10 liters of cool water and allowed to brew for a couple of hours. Plants are processed in the evening in dry weather..

Several sprays at intervals of 3-4 days will help to get rid of shellfish on the site for a long time.

Salmon from slugs is used by experienced gardeners. An aqueous solution of ammonia is also an effective anti-slug agent. In 10 liters of water, you need to dilute a liter of 25% ammonia and fill cracks in the ground with the resulting solutionwhere shellfish can hide.

For continuous tillage in 10 liters of water, 2 liters of ammonia are diluted, and the beds are sprayed.

When treating the beds with ammonia (ammonia), do not allow the solution to get on the leaves of the plants, since the agent is very strong and can leave burns.

Fighting slugs with ammonia will preserve the harvest in the country and in the garden.

Beer against slugs will help get rid of them, its smell is very attractive to these voracious pests. To do this, near the plants favored by mollusks, digging containers with steep walls into the ground, for example, a glass jar, a bottle with a wide mouth, or a plastic cup.

The edges of the containers should rise 1-2 cm above the ground. Then the container is filled 2/3 with beer, and on top, if possible, install protection from debris and pets. On sale there are ready-made devices with a protective visor, very convenient for catching slugs.

You need to change the beer in the container every 2-3 days.until the pests disappear from the site. Since the fight against them in the garden is quite difficult and you need to follow the instructions.

Instead of beer, milk or a mixture of water, honey, and baker's yeast will work. For the mixture, take equal amounts of honey and yeast, diluted with a small amount of water and boiled for several minutes to make the mass glue-like. This mixture attracts slugs with its smell. and does not allow to get out of the container outside.

Mulching the beds with a thick layer of needles is considered one of the most effective methods against slugs. Coniferous needles do not allow mollusks to move, prick their unprotected bodies, scare away the very smell.

In addition, rotted needles are a good fertilizer. You can lay spruce or pine branches around the plants - the result will be no less effective.

In the absence of nearby coniferous trees for mulching the beds, it is quite tobacco and oak leaves are suitable, dry sawdust.

Very often contain the invasion of slugs help coarse sand barriers, coffee grounds, crushed eggshells and shells, fine screening.

They are poured along the beds, around the bushes, along the perimeter of the site with low ridges. You can add soot, copper sulfate, lime, from which slugs die.

There are also ready-made plastic barriers on sale, which are gutters and wide rims with bent edges. They are set around the plants, and shellfish cannot overcome such an obstacle.

Pest control on cabbage

Of all the vegetables in the garden cabbage is especially fond of slugs... Its juicy tender leaves are the best treat for pests, and very often they destroy the entire crop on the site.

It is highly undesirable to use chemical agents on cabbage, especially since there are many effective and affordable folk remedies.

Experienced gardeners recommend sprinkling cabbage with hot water. This vegetable is able to withstand temperatures up to 60 degrees without consequences, while slugs die already at 40 degrees.

If pests are visible between the leaves on the heads of cabbage, you need to heat the water to 40-45 degrees and spray the plants thoroughly.

Processing should not be longso that no burns remain on the leaves. The dead shellfish after a hot shower must be selected from the sheets by hand.

Instant coffee helps to get rid of slugs well. Large individuals lose activity on contact with caffeine and orientation, and the little ones die.

For spraying, it is enough to dissolve a double portion of coffee powder or granules in a glass of water, and then process the cabbage. Smelling the smell, the slugs will bypass the cabbage beds., on the other hand, coffee does no harm to plants.

They do not like pests and the smell of wormwood, tobacco, marigolds, walnut leaves. They need to be brewed in boiling water, insisted for 2-3 hours, after which the cabbage should be processed with strained and chilled infusion.

Occasionally, you can use a weak saline solution (100 g per bucket of water) or a solution of ammonia in a ratio of 1: 6.

During the day, slugs always hide from the heat in dense grass, under stones, in compost heaps. You can make slug traps with your own hands. For this will need materials at hand: old boards, pieces of slate, burlap, roofing felt and other rubbish.

Having chosen a comfortable open space, it should be thoroughly poured with water and put on top of any material... The burlap and rags must be additionally moistened with water.

In a day or two, slugs will gather under cover; they should be collected and taken away from the site, and leave the cover for the next party. See the photo below for what a slug trap looks like.

A good trap is obtained from a regular plastic bottle. The bottle is crumpled on the sides so it doesn't roll on the ground pouring some fruit juice, honey or beer inside, and laid flat between cabbage beds.

From above, you can press it down with a flat stone or board, fixing it in one position. Slugs will definitely smell and fit into the bottle., but it will be difficult for them to get out back.

Once every 2 days, you need to check the traps, remove the pests that have come across and add juice.

Another way to catch slugs is spread out the bait... As bait use grapefruit, orange, or watermelon rind; to do this, they are cut in half, the pulp is selected, and a small hole is cut in the center of the peel.

The resulting cups in the evening are set with a cut down on the beds; slugs attracted by the scent are crawled under the skin and stay there until the morning. After that, only check all baits and collect shellfish.

Preventive measures

The garden needs to be plowed regularly, mow the grass around the perimeter, remove weeds and plant residues in time.

Thinning plantings it is also a good prevention of slugs, because they do not like open and dry places.

After harvest the soil should be thoroughly cleaned of weeds, rotting or dry tops, under which pests can accumulate.

There are many plants the smell of which scares off shellfish and keeps vegetables and berries intact:

  • mint;
  • garlic;
  • chicory;
  • lavender;
  • parsley;
  • mustard.

These plants can be planted not only around the perimeter of the gardenbut also between the beds, protecting the most vulnerable vegetables. Read more about the fight against slugs on vegetables and berries here. But Birds, hedgehogs and frogs cope best with pests, which is not so difficult to attract to the site.

For birds, it is enough to hang feeders on the trees and periodically add grain to them; frogs will be attracted by a small homemade pond with a pile of rotted foliage on the shore.

Hedgehogs quite often wander into the garden themselves, and in order for them to settle there, you need to treat them with milk, cookies, and something else. If hedgehogs or frogs live on the site, no problems with slugs.

Control the number of slugs with the help of folk methods everyone can do it. The combination of preventive measures and protective treatments of plants will make it possible to clear the area from pests in a short time and save the crop.

The most important thing is to do everything on time, without waiting for the slugs to multiply and completely destroy the landings.

The sooner you start to fight them, the more effective the result will be. Read also the material on how to fight slugs in the cellar.
