Red Scarlett is an early maturing potato of Dutch origin. It has elongated, regular-shaped tubers with a pink-raspberry peel, which look great and can be stored for a long time.
Due to their excellent presentation and ability to tolerate transportation well, this variety is very popular among farmers and gardeners.

The rind is relatively thin, crimson red, smooth or slightly rough. The eyes are superficial and not too noticeable, 1-1.5 mm deep, dark or yellowish in color. Light sprouts are purple or reddish at the base.
The color of the pulp of raw tubers: from white to light yellow. When cut, it does not darken in air. The color also does not change during cooking. The shape is elongated, oval, quite correct in most cases.
According to various sources, the starch content is about 10-15% or 16-17%. Associated with this is the property of the Red Scarlett potato to be weakly boiled.
The mass of one tuber is usually in the range from 50-80 to 100-120 grams. Larger tubers are found, including those weighing up to 150 g, but relatively rare. The shape of large tubers is often irregular. The number of tubers on a bush is from 12-15 to 20. They are formed simultaneously, and the difference in size and weight is not too striking.

A low, upright shrub with medium-sized stems. The tops form relatively quickly. The corolla of the flower can be darker, reddish-purple, or light pink-lilac in color. The leaves are dark green, medium in size, the edges of the leaf blade are slightly wavy.
The most suitable climate for the Red Scarlett variety is in the Central and Southern regions of Russia, where its cultivation gives the best results. It is successfully grown in other areas of Russia and in the countries of the ex-USSR.
This potato variety is best suited for a humid, cool climate. In areas where the soil temperature is high or droughts are possible, large ridges of potatoes are formed and watered regularly. Additional calcium is added during planting. The use of soil mulching will not hurt.
The yield depends on the region. A value of up to 45 tons per hectare is often indicated. The maximum yield reaches 60 tons per hectare... The harvest of young potatoes can be 230-250 centners per hectare. After some time, in August, in the same area, on average, twice as much is harvested.

Taste qualities range from very good to quite satisfactory. The tubers have a high content of amino acids, minerals and vitamins.
Red Scarlett potatoes are an early ripening variety. After planting the seed tubers, it takes about 65-70 days, and a new crop can be harvested. On the bush, there are on average 14-15 tubers.
Table variety... It is tasty both fried and boiled. Sliced slices tend to hold their shape well, which is why Red Scarlett is often used to make fries and chips.
Drought resistance is average or slightly above average. On the scale of drought resistance, the variety was assigned a value of 6.5 points. According to this system, 3 points correspond to sensitivity to drought, 9 points - good resistance.
The agricultural technique for this potato is as follows: the soil must certainly be sufficiently loose, only in this way the root system and tubers will be well provided with moisture and air.
For a variety originally from Holland, always you need to maintain optimal soil moisture... For this purpose, the ridges are made 10-20 cm higher than for other varieties, and maintain a row spacing of 70 to 80 cm.

This variety has shown itself to be resistant to the following pests and diseases:

- virus Yn (or PVYn).
Average resistance - to common scab and late blight of tops. The Red Scarlett variety has a high resistance to late blight of tubers.
Planting and leaving
For proper care of Red Scarlett potatoes, you need to remember that at home, in Holland, it is grown according to a well-calibrated system.
In Russian conditions, important, proven recommendations cannot be neglected. So, it is necessary to strictly observe the distance between individual plants and it is unacceptable to "save space": this will lead to crop losses.
Of the tips for preparing Red Scarlett for storage, the most efficient and easy to do is to remove the haulm. 10 (minimum 7) days before digging out the tubers, the tops are cut and removed from the field.
The remaining days before harvesting are needed for potatoes to tighten the skin. The stronger skin will better protect the tubers from damage during digging and transport. If you plant Red Scarlett potatoes in the second decade of May, when the weather is usually favorable, then you can harvest in the second half of August.
Despite the high resistance of this variety to diseases and pests, it needs regular treatment with insecticides, herbicides and fungicides with precise dosage.
An important feature of the Red Scarlett variety is that it does not lose its beneficial properties during storage. Potatoes cooked in February or March do not differ in taste and properties from those freshly harvested.
