Blackberries are a relative of raspberries. Its berries are delicious and aromatic.

Amateur gardeners have almost tamed the skill of gardening blackberry bushes.

Blackberry propagation

For propagation of blackberries, a vegetative method and seeds are used. The seeds are buried in open ground by 4-5 cm, it is better if they spend the winter in the ground.

Vegetative methods are more varied. For example, creeping blackberries can be propagated by planting apical branches, bark suckers, green cuttings, root cuttings, by dividing the bush.

Erect varieties are also propagated, only the apical layers do not take root.

Planting blackberries in the garden

This plant loves to bathe in the sun. In the sun, the harvest is richer, and the berries are sweeter. This should be taken into account when choosing a landing site. It is better to plant in early spring so that the young growth does not freeze.

The dimensions of the furrow depend on what you will plant: for root cuttings, the width and depth are 8-10 cm and 5-8 cm, respectively; for green offspring 15-20 cm and 10-15, for lignified offspring the width and depth is 25-30 cm.

The best soil will be well-drained medium loam with low acidity.

The bottom of the hole is laid with earth with humus or compost, you also need to add potassium sulfide, superphosphate and a little more earth without fertilization from above. Roots are placed on top of this layer. The growth bud should be immersed in the ground no more than 3 cm. It should be covered with a mixture: earth, humus and mineral fertilizers.

Water the bush gradually. After planting, a trunk circle is made - a hole that will hold water. A space of 1.8-2 meters is left between the rows.

Caring for blackberry bushes

Every year it is necessary to loosen the soil, as well as mulch it with humus.

Blackberry pruning

In the first year of life, it is better to prune the inflorescences so that all efforts are spent on strengthening the roots. In the second year, the stems are cut to 1.5-1.8 meters to make harvesting more convenient.

Frozen stems must be cut to live buds. Young shoots are cut in May-June to thin out the bush.

Around June, the tops of the young should be cut off by 5-10 cm.

Garter stalks

In the second year after planting, the plant must be tied to a support. What structures for this to build is decided by the gardener himself, based on the variety of blackberries and imagination. You cannot bend the shoots by force, so as not to break the bush.

In order for the plant to give many lateral shoots, it is necessary to pin the young shoots to the ground and pinch off the tops. A year later, old shoots are cut out, and young ones are raised on supports.

Watering the blackberry

Blackberries do not need an abundance of moisture. But it is still worth keeping an eye on soil moisture. The extra moisture is needed when the berries ripen.

Top dressing

Experienced gardeners recommend applying 50 g of ammonium nitrate under the bush every year. 6-8 kg of humus, 100 g of superphosphate and 30 g of potassium sulphide should be added for the 4th year of life.

Features of winter care

For the winter, blackberry branches must be bent and covered with foil, roofing felt or other materials. In the spring it is necessary to remove the shelter and again tie it to the pegs.

Berries grow only on last year's shoots, so if your bush is frozen, then you will harvest only a year later.
