Chamomile grows not only here. There is also a "chamomile" on the African continent, or rather from South Africa. Her name is gatsania or gazania.

Florists know about 40 species of this plant. It can be both perennial and annual. But in our climate, it is grown only as an annual.

Gatsania itself is a small plant about 20-30 cm high. Of the Asteraceae family. Its inflorescences are very beautiful baskets that attract attention with bright colors. The plant can be classified as a drought-resistant plant.

Therefore, it is best to plant it on the sunny side. The soil for the flower should be light. Moreover, it does not need to be watered abundantly, this will most likely destroy the plant. The plant propagates by seeds and cuttings.

Growing gatsania seedlings

When propagated by seeds, the growing season in gatsania is very long, about a hundred days. Therefore, gardeners begin to grow seedlings from mid-March. Seeds are planted to a depth of 1 centimeter.

At the appropriate temperature (22-24 degrees), the seedlings will delight you in a week. After the emergence of shoots, but before the appearance of the first true leaf, the seedlings must be planted in separate containers.

As soon as the weather is warm, the plant is planted in a permanent place.

The distance between individual flowers should be at least 20-30 cm. After the plant takes root, you need to feed it a little with a complex mineral fertilizer.

One top dressing per month is enough, the solution is made at the rate of 40-50 g per 10 liters of water.

Reproduction of gatsania by cuttings

This can be done when summer reaches its midpoint. Cuttings about 10 cm long are cut from the strongest shoots. before planting the cuttings in the ground, they are first kept a little in a growth regulator solution: 0.1% naphthylacetic acid (NAA) or 0.5% indolylbutyric acid (IMA) solution is used.

At first, the cuttings should be protected from both drafts and direct sunlight. After rooting, the cuttings, before planting in a flower garden, are kept at a temperature of 15-18 degrees above zero, in a room with good lighting.

The plant is unpretentious, does not require any special care. Moderate watering every few days is enough.

At the same time, do not forget to loosen the soil and remove dried inflorescences. Once every 4 weeks, the plant can be fed with mineral fertilizer.

Winter care for gatsania

Unlike many other garden flowers, gatsaniya can winter well in a pot. For this, the selected flowers at the end of September are transplanted into boxes or pots and brought into the prepared room.

The temperature in it in winter should be kept at the level of 8-10 degrees above zero. In winter, the plant practically does not need to be watered, the main thing is to ensure that the soil in the pot does not dry out. With the onset of spring, the flowers are planted back into the flower garden, shortening the shoots by half.

Gatsania diseases

Like any plant, gatsaniya is susceptible to disease. This is mainly gray rot. If the plant is sick, then fungicide treatment is carried out.

And as a prophylaxis against gray rot, you need to do the following things: do not plant gating in areas prone to flooding and do not flood when watering.

Pests that can cause harm are traditional for our latitudes: aphids, snails, slugs and sometimes spider mites.

Where can the plant be used

Gazania is widely used to decorate street flower beds. In combination with various other flowers (ageratum, lobelia, etc.), you can create unique flower arrangements.
