How to plant gladioli

The time for planting gladioli depends on the weather conditions. In order for the plant to bloom magnificently and give good planting material, it is necessary to plant it in soil that has warmed up to 8 ° C. In central Russia, the landing time begins at the end of April. You can speed up the process of warming up the earth or melting snow by covering the site of the proposed planting with a black film.

For earlier flowering, corms are grown before planting in open ground. To do this, they are planted in early April in a container with a nutrient substrate. After the onset of stable heat, they are transplanted to a chosen place in the garden.

The landing site is sunny, protected from northern winds. Corms do not tolerate the close location of groundwater - they can get sick with fungal diseases or die. Gladioli can be planted in one place for 3-4 years. After that, sowing green manures, such as mustard, peas or oats, restores the balance of the soil composition well.

Medium tubers work well for planting. If in a gardening store or at a fair they offer to buy large tubers, then you need to know that they are old. Such planting material will not give healthy children and a replacement corm; it will bloom badly.

Before planting, the corms are cleaned of lagging scales and treated in a manganese solution, leaving the planting material in it for at least an hour. The soil should be breathable, loose and fertile. A complex mineral fertilizer, ash, humus and rotted manure are added to the hole.

To avoid stagnation of moisture, it is recommended to pour a handful of coarse sand or fine expanded clay under the bottom. Adult plants are planted to a depth of 8-10 cm, children - 2-3 cm. The first two weeks after planting, it is necessary to maintain moderate soil moisture, preventing drying out.

Gladioli care

In hot weather, plants are watered every day in the morning or evening. Loosening and mulching of the soil is carried out.

Also, for good flowering and the formation of healthy children, fairly frequent feeding is needed.

When seedlings appear, it is necessary to begin to apply fertilizers, the basis of which is nitrogen. During budding and flowering, potash-phosphorus fertilizers are used.

Gladioli are fed no more than once every two weeks. Often, during flowering, plants need a tie to the supports. High gladioli can be broken by wind and rain.

Cleaning and storage of planting material

Early and medium varieties of gladioli begin to be dug up in September. For good formation of such bulbs, it takes 35-40 days from the moment of flowering cessation. For late varieties - 45-50 days. Bulbs grown from babies and late varieties are harvested last.

The dug out bulbs are washed in a manganese solution and left to dry. Dry them for 1.5-2 months in a dry, ventilated room at room temperature. Periodically they need to be turned over, inspected for the presence of pests and diseases.

After drying, the babies are separated from the main corms, packaged in paper bags and stored in a cool, dry place. The temperature should be no higher than 7 ° C. In a private house, bulbs are stored in a cellar, and in an apartment - in a refrigerator.

If there is a lot of planting material and it is not possible to store it in the refrigerator, you can leave it for storage at room temperature.

When stored in a warm room, the bulbs are often damaged by pests such as thrips.

Signs of their appearance are white bloom on the bulb and its drying out. When a pest appears, the planting material is sprinkled with lime or chalk. They are treated with chemicals. As soon as the bulbs begin to wake up, they must be peeled from the scales and laid out on vernalization in a bright place.

Gladioli need constant care, but if you follow the recommendations for their cultivation, they will reward with colorful, lush flowering.
