Peonies are very popular among gardeners. The plant has beautiful flowers with decorative foliage, the color of which is very diverse: from pastel to bright colors.

Peony is a durable plant, therefore it grows well without transplanting for several years in a row.

The name "peony" comes from the name of the ancient Greek physician of the Olympian gods, Pean, who was an abomination of evil.

Pean received a plant from the mother of Apollo Lethe, with the help of which he was able to heal the numerous wounds of Hades inflicted on him by Hercules. Pean was an excellent doctor, and therefore many healers envied him, even the god of healing Asclepius (Aesculapius) himself. When, out of envy, Aesculapius decided to poison Pean, Hades, in gratitude for his healing, turned him into a flower that looks like a rose.

Peonies have been cultivated in culture since ancient times. This flower was known and loved in the ancient world of China and Europe, not only as decorative, but also as healing.

For the first time in Russia, the peony appeared during the reign of Peter 1, and is very popular among gardeners to this day.

Requirements for the location of planting a peony

Peony is a light-loving plant that grows well in sunny and open places; slight shading is allowed during the daytime. To avoid the development of plant diseases, it needs air circulation. It is recommended to plant it away from buildings, bushes and trees.

Soil requirements. A loamy cultivated slightly acidic soil is perfect for a peony. If the soil is clayey on the site, it is recommended to add sand to it; on sandy areas - clay; lime is added to the acidic soil.

Spring planting of peonies

Peonies should be planted in spring immediately after the ground has thawed well. Planting should be deep enough (the top bud of the plant should go 5 cm deep into the soil). The distance between plants should be at least one meter. Planting peonies in large numbers involves the preparation of a special trench.

The danger of planting a flower in spring is that its stems grow back rather quickly and can be easily broken when planting.

Autumn planting of peonies

Unlike spring planting, in autumn the flower is at rest, so this planting is absolutely safe for the plant. The main condition for planting a plant in the ground is the correct planting depth.

The optimum depth of the bud should be 3-5 cm from the soil, but no more than that. When the first frost appears, a small hill with peat is poured over the plant, which must be removed in early spring. Thus, the plant will be protected from severe frosts in winter.

To plant a peony in the ground, dig a hole 80 * 80 * 80 cm in size.In areas with a close location of groundwater, the depth of the hole is increased to 1 meter with an additional drainage layer of 20 cm.Fragments of old tiles, sand, crushed stone or broken brick can be used for drainage ... On sandy soils, a layer of clay is laid on the bottom of the pit.

Pits should be prepared in advance: for planting in the fall, a pit is prepared in the spring, and vice versa.

A mullein or unripe compost with a thickness of 20-25 cm is laid on the drainage. The remaining 50-60 cm of the pits are filled with a nutrient mixture, which consists of loam, matured compost and rotted manure. 200-250 grams of superphosphate, one liter can of ash, 150-200 grams of potassium sulfate are introduced into the finished planting pit.

All this is mixed well and watered with a dark pink solution of potassium permanganate at the rate of 10-15 liters per pit. The pit is ready. Now you can safely plant a peony in it.

Peony care

Plant care involves moderate watering (once every 8-12 days at the rate of 12-15 liters of water per plant); top dressing with mineral and organic fertilizers; regular weeding and loosening of row spacings.
