Mulberry belongs to the Moraceae family and has exotic origins: the eastern part of China and Iran are the places that gave birth to this magnificent secular fruit tree. There are two varieties of mulberry (Morus Celsa): the white mulberry (Morus Alba) and the black mulberry (Morus Nigra). Between the two varieties there are differences that are not only aesthetic, but also practical: in fact, the fruits of the white mulberry have a larger appearance and taste are sour; those of black mulberry, on the other hand, are the typical dark-violet, sweet and juicy fruits that we all know.
The mulberry tree can reach up to fifteen meters in height and, in some cases, is able to live over a hundred years.
The full maturation period takes place around the month of April, although its fruits can be appreciated only in the late summer season.
As mentioned, the use of mulberry is not limited only to the culinary sphere: in fact this fleshy and tasty fruit is also used in the herbalist field. Many medical traditions in different countries of the world use mulberry fruits or its leaves to prepare infusions, herbal teas or therapeutic decoctions. The confirmation of the beneficial properties of this plant comes from the chemical analysis that nowadays it is possible to carry out on the plant to detect its essential components and to identify how and in what quantity it is possible to use them for therapeutic purposes or in the treatment of some symptoms.

Property



The mulberry tree, which certainly cannot remain indifferent to those who like to appreciate the flavor of the fruit and the aesthetic beauty of its foliage, is recognized as one of the best sources of active ingredients in nature. In phytotherapy, leaves, roots, bark and of course the fruits of the mulberry tree are used.
One of the most important properties of the mulberry plant - in this case, the white one (Morus Alba) - is represented by the ability of its fruits to cause diuretic and laxative effects, probably due to the strong sugar component contained in its white fruits . In this case, therefore, it is a real panacea for those suffering from problems related to constipation.
As for the black mulberry (Morus Nigra) instead, in addition to the typical laxative property of white mulberry (which in this case is present not only in fruits, but in all parts of the tree), it seems that it is also an excellent decongestant, refreshing, tonic and soothing. It has depurative properties and, in the case of leaves, also antobiotic.
The black mulberry tree contains many different beneficial components which, if used in the most appropriate way and always under the advice of a competent expert, can help our body to function better: among these, we find amino acids, manganese, copper, boron and zinc. The tannins, also present, can help in the case of mild gastritis. Folic acid, present largely, is considered an effective antianemic. In the mulberry plant there are also vitamins of groups A, B and C. Glucose and fructose are naturally occurring sugars in the plant. Carotenoids and anthocyanins, which characterize the particular purple color of the fruit, are considered an excellent remedy for the protection of the circulatory system because they help protect blood vessels.
One of the most prominent properties of mulberry is the hypoglycemic one. Although the hypoglycemic components inside the fruit have not yet been identified, this has the ability to lower the blood sugar level in the event of hyperglycemia, while reducing it very little in cases of normal blood sugar. It is therefore the subject of study for the treatment of patients suffering from type A diabetes and, above all, type B.

Main uses



Most of the tree components can be used with black mulberry.
The leaves have beneficial properties capable of performing antibiotic and diuretic functions.
It is possible to put them in infusion and drink a cup before meals.
The bark can be prepared in a decoction in cases of constipation, kidney failure and - as already mentioned for fruits - diabetes.
Thanks to the fruits it is possible to obtain a syrup to be used in case of inflammation of the throat or slight lesions of the oral apparatus (for example, aphthae).

Mulberry: Some remedies



Skin cream:
Boil the leaves and crush them with a mortar after they have dried. The preparation, dense, can be applied on areas affected by eczema or rash.
Decoction to stimulate the appetite:
Use 20 to 30 g of bark and bring it to the boil in 0.5 L of water. After having passed it with a sieve, let it cool. Drink a few glasses with honey before meals.
Purifying decoction:
Boil the leaves in one liter of water for about three minutes. After resting it, drink the filtered decoction all day long,
Mouthwash:
Get mulberry roots. Let them boil in 1L of water to halve the amount of liquid. Let it rest and strain it. In case of gum pain or toothache, let it linger on the painful area before spitting it out.
Decoction for constipation:
In half a liter of water, boil about 30 g of black mulberry roots and bark. Take the decoction on an empty stomach in the morning and evening.
Herbal tea for hypertension:
In a liter of boiling water let soak some fresh mulberry leaves. Once rested and filtered, drink a few glasses during the day.
