Garden design: which plants to choose
The design of the gardens cannot, of course, ignore the choice of the plant species that will be used to compose it. From this point of view, succulents are a solution that is quite suitable for everyone's needs, from experienced gardeners to neophytes. These are species that can withstand outside and inside without problems, which can survive even periods of drought and which do not suffer from salty winds. Their succulent fabrics are characterized by their ability to absorb a considerable amount of water, storing it and redistributing it to the various parts of the body in case of need. They love a soil formed by a rubble dust, two-fifths of river sand and two-fifths of earth from heather: an ideal soil for both pot cultivation and bedding (if proceed to the cultivation in pot it is advisable to place on the bottom of the container a layer of shards, which will favor the drainage of water). Succulent plants prefer constant lighting, but they live in shade or half-shade without difficulty, due to their great ability to adapt. From the point of view of watering, the water must be administered with moderation, bearing in mind that plants in the open ground between November and February must not be absolutely watered; in the rest of the winter, on the other hand, watering every two weeks will be fine. The frequency is increased once a week between April and October, remembering that a damp soil means that there is no need for water. Speaking of fertilization, on the other hand, it must be carried out during the planting, accompanying the earth with organic fertilizer, and then from April to October, once a month, soluble mineral fertilizer alternating with algae extract.
The most suitable species
The most suitable succulents for gardens are the crassula and the cotyledon. The first gives life to flowers of reduced dimensions in the shape of a star, it needs constant lighting and must be wet throughout the year, reducing the amount of water following flowering. It is good to pay attention to the attacks of the parasites: to avoid, moreover, are the water stagnations due to a bad drainage, which risk provoking the development of gray mold or the appearance of root rot. The cotyledon, on the other hand, must be repotted once a year, in the month of March, using a compound of mature leaves, sand and garden soil. The flowers appear after two or three years, and in most cases are pending.
Identify a style
Clearly succulent plants are just an example of how gardens can be designed, but the solutions available are endless, including flower beds, hedges, fruit trees, creepers, shrubs, potted flowers, and so on. The important thing is to know how to choose a defined style, and above all to insert the green space in a harmonious way in the surrounding environment. From a practical point of view, the planning phase must also take into account functional elements such as electrical outlets (necessary if you want to create a lighting system) or water outlets for the irrigation system.
Climatic conditions and sun exposure
Furthermore, it is not possible to disregard certain factors such as exposure to the sun of the soil and climatic conditions. With regard to the exhibition, the best location is the one to the south, which guarantees sun for the whole day (but on the other hand requires, for the hottest summer days, the provision of special shelters or the creation of shaded areas for avoid burns or burns to the plants), while it would be advisable to avoid exposure to the east, which is characterized by sudden changes in temperature and above all by the disappearance of the sun from the early afternoon. The northern exposure, instead, is characterized by very gradual temperature changes, practically not perceptible, and therefore very pleasing to the plants. Regarding the climatic conditions, elements such as the abundance of rainfall, the intensity of the winds, the rigidity of winter temperatures or the summer drought are elements that must be taken into consideration as they are able to significantly affect the possibility of growth (ea times of survival) of the different plant species. There are plants that love rain and humid climates and others that prefer dry conditions: for this reason the environmental context must be verified in advance.
Calculate costs and costs in advance
Once the planning phase has been completed, including a preventive calculation of expenses and costs (considering, moreover, that a well-kept and luxuriant garden, beyond the aesthetic impact, increases the economic value of the building by to which it belongs), you can move on to the operational phase, preparing the soil in which the lawn must be sown, and possibly applying a chemical herbicide (away from any food crops destined for the table). It is worth underlining that the design of the gardens can also be assisted thanks to special programs available on the web (one of the many Garden Puzzle) that can provide a valid and free help in the arrangement of the different elements (flowerbeds, paths, hedges, bushes, trees, etc.)
