Broom flowers: how they are made and where they grow

Quoted several times by local poets and writers (the most famous case is that of Giacomo Leopardi), broom flowers can be grown without problems in the apartment. Plant characterized by numerous varieties, widespread throughout the Mediterranean area, the broom has particularly fragrant yellow flowers, and requires, in order to grow, a rather sunny place and a dry and warm climate. It does not show particular needs, however, for what concerns the ground, since it survives perfectly even on rocky or arid substrates: the important thing, instead, is that they are not too humid (especially in winter) or excessively heavy. The flowers require sporadic waterings, in the case in which the plant is placed in full ground, or more constant, in the case in which the plant is placed in a vase. Rare, on the other hand, must be the fertilizations, to be carried out during flowering with specific products. It is good to remember that the broom is multiplied by cuttings or by seed. While the sowing must be carried out during the winter months, the cuttings must be prepared in August and September: it is sufficient to let root some rather long sprigs inside a porous soil. The young plants need, after flowering, a slight topping, while all the varieties require an annual pruning, aimed at removing the diseased parts and favoring an abundant flowering through the appearance of new shoots. In the case in which it is cultivated in pot, it is preferable to opt for wide and deep containers. The broom is a very strong species, resistant to diseases: however, this does not mean that it is necessary to pay attention to root rot, which could cause serious infections.

Its use in the food sector

Not everyone knows, among other things, that i broom flowers they can also be used in the kitchen, of course, after having thoroughly washed and dried them. You can prepare with them, for example, a tasty salad consisting of hard-boiled sliced ​​eggs, boiled green beans, broom flowers, lettuce, capers, olives: everything should be seasoned with balsamic vinegar, a drizzle of oil and salt, possibly accompanied with a walnut cream. Evidently, the broom can only be enjoyed if it is not treated with chemical herbicides.

The different varieties of broom

It is possible to distinguish different varieties of broom: the cytisus multiflorus, for example, gives rise to small white flowers as summer approaches; cytisus grandiflorus, on the other hand, comes from Spain, and is characterized by its considerable size (it can exceed a height of three meters, while yellow flowers have a diameter of about three centimeters). And again, we must mention the cytisus canariensis, coming from the Canary Islands, in turn endowed with particularly fragrant yellow flowers, and the cytisus procumbens, which instead comes from the Balkans and does not exceed forty centimeters of vertical extension: it is, to be honest , of a hybrid nano, with very pleasant raceme inflorescences. The cytisus battandieri, moreover, reaches five meters, with a tree-like development that produces pineapple-scented flowers. There are also the most widespread species, the cytisus ardoini, the cytisus beanii, the cytisus dallimorei, the spiny broom (very widespread in Sardinia, with an intense aroma) and the fragrant broom (a shrub with raceme inflorescences). In all, there are seventy-five plants belonging to the broom variety, most of which are characterized by the almost total absence of leaves (the branches, moreover, are often thorny), which in any case tend to fall when they begin to appear the first flowers. Equipped with a decidedly branched crown, the broom offers woody and thin stems with an erect, brown or dark green color, with a fruit that looks like a pod containing fifteen flattened seeds. As far as i broom flowers they are widely used in ornamental environments, both for rock gardens and for minimalist gardens, often this plant is also used for the reforestation of degraded areas, as well as to consolidate the clods: thanks to the rather complex and dense roots.

Which species to exploit for cultivation

The best species for growing in pots is the genista lydia: a dwarf variety, native to eastern Europe and Syria, with reduced dimensions (the height almost reaches eighty centimeters), several green and gray thorny branches and a slightly hanging habit. The flowers are typically yellow, grouped in racemes that will reach very high heights, with flowering that, depending on the climate, occurs between the beginning of May and the end of June. Very beautiful, but not very suitable for cultivation, is the species ulex europaeus, a shrub with a short stem but with many branches, ascending or straight.

Broom flowers: diseases, infections and fungi

In conclusion, it should be emphasized that in the spring months the flowers can suffer fungal infestations or by aphids: the latter can only be eradicated using insecticides, while for fungi a systemic fungicide is necessary, avoiding the development of a too humid environment.
