For garden lawns we generally use grasses, a large family of monocotyledonous herbaceous species that are not too delicate and easily adapt to any type of soil and climate. Grasses grow almost everywhere and do not distinguish between sandy or wet or even rocky soils; furthermore they have a rapid growth and if they are frequently trampled, they do not deform. They bear arid climates well and even include, in their large family, aquatic varieties that are usually mixed with other herbs of the same family such as Festuca and Loietto. All this to make the lawn stronger, durable over the years but also to slow down the growth that would otherwise oblige too frequent cuts. Among the grasses there are also species - the macrotherm - that keep the lawn green even in the hottest period, that is when the temperatures reach levels that easily cause yellowing and drought. And then there are the microthermals, which are more suited to humid climates, which help to keep the lawn even in the winter months but which must be continuously wet in the summer. Among the mixtures of grasses, the Poa pratensis is frequent - rich in nutrients and resistant to humidity - and able to give a lawn with dark green nuances. But for the garden lawn there are many types of grasses used: Lolium, Paspalum, Dichondra, Agrostis, Pennisetum, Cynodon, Stenotaphrum, Zoysia. Some of these are many used in central and southern Italy, especially in the meadows along the coasts.LA PRINA SOWING

After designing the garden and planning the area for the lawn, it is necessary to choose the most suitable types of grass for the soil and climate and then, after buying the seeds in the nurseries, proceed with sowing. As already mentioned, it is advisable to choose mixtures of seeds in such a way that the grassy surface, assisted by the various characteristics of the different species, is stronger and lasts over time. The time for sowing coincides with the species of seeds chosen but in principle the autumn and spring correspond to the best periods. By purchasing mixtures of microtherm variety, sowing must take place at temperatures between 15 and 18 degrees; for macrothermal species instead, warmer temperatures will be useful, between 24 and 30 degrees. The ideal time of day to sow is the morning when the temperatures are mild or fresh and there is still a reasonable level of humidity in the air and in the ground. Depending on what use you want to make of the lawn, you will also choose the mixtures of seeds: in general for a turf intended for an ornamental garden we prefer the grasses able to create a dense and soft lawn. To sow then proceed by hand or with the spreader: it is necessary to remember that the ideal quantity corresponds to 30 grams of seeds per square meter and that these should be planted about 5 mm from the surface.

Also the care and maintenance of the turf will depend on the mixtures of selected seeds. In order for the lawn to grow lush and strong, it is necessary to proceed with constant care. Subsequently sowing, irrigation must be daily - the first hours of the day or those after sunset are preferred - and not too abundant. The macrothermal varieties, for example, optimally withstand high temperatures and drought so they do not need so much water. They will instead risk suffering from colder climates and lower temperatures.
About three weeks after sowing the mixtures for the lawn, we can finally witness the growth of the turf. It, after about a month and only if it reaches a height of 10 cm, will be cut to about 3 cm. After the first cut it is advisable to distribute a gradual release fertilizer on the lawn. For what concerns the frequency of irrigation of a grass already grown, it will always be useful to refer to the types of seeds planted. Irrigations will have to be more frequent in the case of microthermals and more rare with the macroterms that better withstand the heat and which are therefore used for sports fields.
