Before choosing the type of vegetation to be sown for the new lawn, it is necessary to consider exactly which type of lawn you want to occupy. There is talk of ornamental lawns for private gardens and public parks (whose grass will be resistant to trampling and temperature changes), of sports lawn for sports fields (which requires dense and uniform vegetation, suitable for frequent mowing for maintain a minimum height of grass, to the trampling of games and training: the particularity of this turf is the accurate and continuous maintenance to avoid damaging it) and finally of rustic lawn for the banks of the rivers or for other particular areas ( in this case the grass must be robust and with deep roots, able to survive with little maintenance and at low and high temperatures). Among the most common lawn grasses are grasses, of which there are about 7500 species: they differ from the speed and growth of growth, the resistance to tearing and trampling, the resistance to insidious weeds and resistance to hot temperatures and to the cold ones (this feature allows you to select the most suitable grass for the climatic conditions where the turf will be placed). To get a beautiful lawn, the best time to start sowing is spring. You can also proceed in the middle of autumn, being careful not to sow beyond the end of November. With summer sowing it will be necessary to increase the watering, with a minimum of 3 times a day (instead in the other cases it is sufficient only once, as explained below).Soil sterilization and its preparation
Subjecting the soil that will host the new vegetation to a sterilization process is a fundamental step. One of the most problematic situations, in fact, is the emergence of weeds: these can alter the aesthetic appearance of the future lawn and cause a sort of competition (for the search for light, water and space) among the good vegetation and the bad one. A good weeding is carried out through the irrigation of the same weeds, to allow them a vegetative restart and to treat them with total herbicides with systemic action, which will allow the elimination of the same roots thanks to the deep penetration of the substance. Attention must be paid to the distribution of the herbicide, to avoid the death of other plants and shrubs. Once weeds are eliminated, we can proceed with the preparation of the earth where the turf will be sown. It is good to remove pebbles and the remaining infesting roots under the surface, then check the drainage to evaluate the structure of the same soil; if it is necessary to improve the substrate, it is necessary to use organic matter to be added to the earth (if the choice falls on the manure, it must be sterilized to avoid possible infestations) or point to a mixture of sand, peat, soil or other compounds. After having passed this first phase, an addition of mineral salts (for example fertilizer with potassium) can be added to favor the growth of the grass in the first months. Mix the soil and then level it with a rake to remove hollows and dunes (which cause water to stagnate), settle it with a heavy roller and then level it again.
Garden grass: Sowing and maintenance of the lawn
Once the soil is ready, it is sown uniformly first vertically and then horizontally; seed distribution should be about 1 kg every 20 meters: this is to be evaluated according to the type of seeds. After having distributed the seed, it will be necessary to bury it slightly, first with the rake and then to pass with the roller; now go on to irrigation, which must be fine and uniform, to be carried out every day for a few minutes: this to keep the soil moist enough, until the grass grows. With the arrival of spring, the grassy surface will become more prosperous and dense; its maintenance is fundamental, and is to be carried out at regular time intervals. We must also consider the fertilization and mowing of the grass, to be done once a week from the beginning of spring until the end of the autumn season: mowing the lawn allows the grass to get stronger, stay healthy and aesthetically beautiful.
