Balcony flowers
Before making a choice it is advisable to analyze some conditions that may be limiting for the correct development and growth of plants:
- extension of the balcony
- balcony display
- types of containers and their dimensions
- types of land
- weather conditions
- coexistence between different species
Generally it is recommended to address towards smaller herbaceous plants or towards flowering plants, with decorative purposes.
Climbing plants that have a vertical development and take up limited space may also be suitable.
Begonia
It is a succulent, flowery and ornamental plant.
It is used to fill vases on window sills, terraces or balconies, as it has small dimensions and lives well outdoors.
It has a succulent stem, erect, with a height between 25 and 40 cm. of bright green color.
The leaves are oval and rounded, with a continuous margin, of fleshy consistency, of bright green or reddish color depending on the variety.
They are edible for humans and are used to flavor salads.
Presents some inconspicuous female buds, while the masculine ones are more showy and with colors ranging between white, pink and red.
The fruit is a triangular capsule of leathery consistency.
It requires a soft and well drained soil, rich in organic material and enriched with humus.
It must be placed in sunny and bright places, but not in direct sunlight that could cause the foliage to wither.
It prefers temperate and mild climates and fears the cold, which is why it is recommended to repair the plant in the greenhouse during the winter season.
It must be watered frequently, without soaking the soil, and fertilize monthly with liquid fertilizers.
Tulip
It is a herbaceous flowering plant that lives well in pots and that, having a vertical development, occupies limited spaces, therefore being well suited for balconies or terraces.
It has an erect, slender, dark green color.
The leaves are narrow, lanceolate, covered with a waxy patina that makes them rigid, and have an alternate insertion.
The perfumed petals have a corolla of very bright colors ranging from white to yellow to pink to red; the petals have a fleshy consistency and a lobed shape with a rounded or pointed edge depending on the variety.
It loves the soft, well-drained soils, with a basic and not clayey component.
It must be exposed to the sun, but not to direct rays; prefers warm climates and fears both cold and drafts.
The plant must be watered constantly during the warm months and fertilized every two months with specific fertilizers for flowering plants.
Achimene
It is an evergreen plant with bushy features and ornamental appearance.
It has a rhizomatous-type root from which an erect stem departs with flexible branches with a hanging appearance, which make the plant particularly suitable for being housed in hanging vessels.

Flowering occurs throughout the summer until early autumn.
It requires a fertile, well-drained soil enriched with peat and river sand.
It must be exposed to sunlight, but not to its direct rays; loves temperate and warm climates, but never with temperatures above 25 degrees.
It is advisable to water often using warm water, and use saucers with gravel to maintain the right amount of moisture to the soil.
We must fertilize at least every 2 months with liquid fertilizers.
Surfinia
It is a herbaceous flowering plant belonging to the genus of petunias.
It is very suitable for forming spots of color in ornamental vases on window sills or balconies, also due to its hanging habit which forms real cascades of flowers.
It has a herbaceous, sticky stem with viscous, oval-shaped and light green leaves, often covered with a thin layer of down.
The flowers have a funnel shape ending with 5 upper lobes, with very bright colors, in shades of white, pink, red and purple.
It requires a soft, well-drained soil, possibly enriched with sand, peat, organic material and finely shredded bark.
It must be exposed in sunny areas of the balcony, preventing it from being struck by drafts which could easily break the stems and damage the very delicate petals.
It loves warm climates and fears the cold, but must be preserved from excessive heat.
Watering must be frequent (at least every 2 days, in the warm months) and abundant, taking care not to drench the soil to avoid damaging its roots.
Also the fertilizations should be done constantly and with a fortnightly frequency, preferably using specific fertilizers for flowering plants.
