Maca dry extract
The Maca of the Andes (scientific name: Lepidium peruvianum Chacon), also known as Peruvian Ginseng, is a herbaceous plant cultivated solely on the Peruvian Andes since 1600 BC, at an altitude ranging from 3800 to 4500 meters, and belonging to the family of Brassicacae. What we use of this plant is the tuberous root, used since the times of the Inca, both fresh and dried, for its aphrodisiac and revitalizing properties.
The plant also boasts a high nutritional value, very similar to that of cereals. For this reason it had a fundamental role in the diet of the indigenous peoples of the Perch and their animals. It is rich in carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, mineral salts and essential fatty acids.
The Incas considered the maca a true gift of the gods to offer to warriors and priests to ensure their long life and constant energy.
The plant arrived in Europe already at the end of the 1400s through the Spanish conquerors who colonized those lands and became aware of their most precious fruits. But it is only from the 1960s and 1970s that it begins to be analyzed from a medical and organoleptic point of view. Scientific studies have shown, thanks to the amino acids contained in it, the ability to generate a state of vigor and psycho-physical well-being that make it suitable to be taken as a food supplement, especially by those who put a strain on their body , as sportsmen and athletes, or those suffering from food shortages.
Maca also benefits those who carry out intense intellectual activity (such as students, managers, researchers) which can lead to more or less serious forms of stress, fatigue and depression. The tuber acts by increasing concentration, memory and mental lucidity, like coffee or other nervous system stimulants, without containing caffeine.
Although the Inca also consumed it fresh, in dishes or drinks, today we consume it mainly dried. Drying allows the root to be preserved for quite a long time keeping its properties unaltered.
DRIED MACA EXTRACT - PREPARATION
To obtain the extract of dried maca we use the roots, or those parts of the plant that have a higher concentration of active ingredients. Once the dry extract has dried, proceed with spraying and titration (volumetric analysis). This ensures the correct presence of the active ingredient inside the preparation, guaranteeing its beneficial and healing properties.
Dry maca can be used directly in powder form or used for the preparation of tablets, capsules, tablets.
The powder can also be rehydrated, or dissolved in water or other beverages, added to foods or used in cold infusions.
PROPERTIES AND BENEFITS OF DRIED MACA
The dry maca has remarkable energetic and tonic properties that carry out important beneficial activities on the organism.
- Immunostimulatory activity: strengthens the immune system, activates cellular metabolism and increases resistance to pathogenic factors.
- Anti-tumor activity: scientific research has shown that maca is able, thanks to the presence of glucocinolates, to reduce the incidence of breast and stomach tumors.
-Anti-aging activity: antioxidant vitamins (A, C, E), flavonoids, phosphorus and trace minerals give physical vigor, tissue tonicity, cell turnover and mental lucidity.
- Anabolic activity: natural sterols promote the development of muscle mass, becoming a valid alternative for athletes to chemical anabolics.
Aphrodisiac activity: Maca is a stimulant able to improve sexual activity and increase both male and female fertility. It even seems to increase sperm volume, sperm count and their motility. It also regulates ovarian function and alleviates the annoying menopausal symptoms (hot flushes, depression, fatigue, osteoporosis, vaginal dryness).
- Bone strengthening: the massive presence of calcium and mineral salts at easily absorbable levels, makes the maca a weapon against osteoporosis. In fact, it favors the increase of bone tissue and the intake is particularly indicated in the phases of youthful growth, during pregnancy and during menopause.
- Anti-anemic activity: the iron and vitamin B2 contained in the maca stimulate the production of red blood cells, making the plant an excellent adjuvant for the treatment of medium-gravity anemias.
DOSAGE AND SIDE EFFECTS
Dry maca can be taken daily, in powder or tablet form, in a quantity ranging from 5 to 20 g of dried maca root or from 400 to 1000 mg of dry extract. The quantity varies depending on the intensity of the physical and mental activity that takes place and it is good to be followed, in the dosage, by a doctor, a homeopath or a herbalist. We recommend taking a meal far from meals.
No real contraindications were found in the maca, but a controlled use is recommended in cases of male subjects with a history of prostate cancer or with high levels of PSA (prostate specific antigen); women with a history of or breast cancer; subjects suffering from hyperthyroidism.
It should also be remembered that as with any other product, allergic reactions or cases of hypersensitivity to the plant are possible. In this case, at the first sign of discomfort, the administration should be immediately interrupted and contacted your doctor who will give indications for remedies and countermeasures.
