Geranium cutting

Geraniums are beautiful plants that simply embellish and are easy to grow, as they do not require special care. You can also multiply them with a single plant. This guide will help you create a cutting, that is the fragment of a plant cut specially and planted in the ground or put into water to regenerate the missing parts. In this way you can multiply your geraniums creating a fantastic scenario on your balcony, terrace or garden. The facilitation of creating cuttings is that it allows you to save the geranium branches that are inadvertently broken. The size of the sprig is not important, it will also give roots, surely it is bigger, the better the chances of success will be. Also, the longer the sprig used, the larger your plant will be at the beginning. There geranium cutting it is removed by larger shoots and the ideal period is towards the end of summer. Usually, the one about 10 cm long is chosen and must be cut under the knot with a well sharpened and well sterilized knife, avoid fraying the tissues, eliminate the buds, flowers and lower leaves. Treat the base of the cuttings with specific hormones in order to promote rooting and also use a powder fungicide. Finally, there is the geranium cutting in a mixture of peat and fine sand, up to the height of the first leaves and places the vase in the shadows where it is possible to maintain a constant temperature of around 16-18 ° C. It is advisable to use sterilized vessels, also sterilizing the stove, steam or oven, bringing it to a temperature of 100-120 ° C for a few minutes. Cover the vase with transparent plastic to ensure warmth and humidity, avoiding touching the cuttings and keeping the soil always damp, eliminating any condensation, which is dangerous for the creation of mold. Leave for about 30-45 days in this state, waiting for the first roots, then transplant the cuttings into plants in another pot.

Geranium cutting in water

Fill a tall container with at least a liter of water and some coca-cola that will serve to stimulate the plant in the production of new roots. Then insert the stem and leave the container in a sunny and warm position, otherwise in the case of low temperatures it is more appropriate to keep it indoors, in a bright position and close to heat sources. After about twenty days, the twig will begin to have the first roots. It is advisable to wait until they are long enough before transplanting it into a vase containing well-fertilized soil.

Moisture and rooting hormones

The geranium cutting, not initially having a root system, can be dehydrated much more easily, causing death. In order for the transplant to be successful, the buried cuttings must be placed in a shady position to avoid desiccation, the soil must be moist, avoid stagnation so as not to create rottenness and to finish the surrounding air must be moist, therefore place containers always below PVC covers, non-woven fabric and the like. To irrigate the geranium cutting, use a nebulizer that allows you to create the right conditions for environmental humidity.
To stimulate the production of new roots, if the plant is not very vigorous it is advisable to give it some rooting hormones. Auxin is the natural plant hormone that performs this action, but you can also choose chemicals like indole-3-butyric acid or naphthylacetic acid in liquid, gel or powder form.

Cutting geranium: Advantages and disadvantages of cuttings

The cutting technique allows asexual multiplication, that is, without the genetic recombination that is normally linked to sexual reproduction. The plant obtained is in effect a true clone of the "mother" geranium because it has the same identical DNA. This means that one can already know from the start which characteristics a plant deriving from cuttings will present, unlike what happens instead with the multiplication by seed to which is linked a certain probability due to its genetic recombination.
Another advantage linked to the use of cuttings is that the reproduction by seed, often does not lead to positive results, due to the lack of fertility of the seed, to the particular conditions required during germination and to the time necessary to become adult. The harvesting of cuttings from an adult plant certainly accelerates the flowering process. One of the disadvantages linked to the use of multiplication by cuttings is the absence of genetic variability between the starting geranium and the plant obtained, it can therefore happen that the arrival of an infection, of a parasite or of any crop adversity is in able to attack and spread also to the new plant, lacking in defense, the other disadvantage linked to the cutting can be the transmission of various diseases or infections from the mother plant.
