Sow the lawn
To achieve a compact, soft and bright-colored turf it is essential to carefully prepare the land and sow it according to specific rules. Here are suggestions (and little tricks) for an impeccable technique.
Preliminary work: soil preparation
The best time for sowing the lawn is spring but also the beginning of autumn is advisable, as the still mild temperatures and the presence of humidity at constant levels allow the seeds to sprout quickly.
Before proceeding with the actual sowing, it is essential to prepare the soil, which must be accurate in many respects. Preliminarily, the soil must be cleaned - preferably by hand or with the help of a small hoe - from all the infesting roots and stones (even small ones). Once this operation is completed, the soil must be moved. If the space we have available is small, we can do it manually with a spade, otherwise - if the area is very large - it is essential to use a motor hoe (it can also be rented at a good garden center). The depth to reach is at least 20/25 centimeters (this in the case that the ground has already been worked in previous years; if instead it is a land that has been "stopped" for a long time, the depth to reach is at least 40 cm) and the operation must be repeated at least a couple of times, to have a movement of the earth such as to bring out any type of residue to be discarded and to better refine the clods.
The importance of drainage
At this point the soil has been purified of all waste and we can move on to the next operation. Considering that for an appreciable final result it is necessary that there is an excellent drainage, two tricks must be used: together with the earth must be mixed a suitable amount of sand (generally in a ratio of 1/5 compared to the present earth) and in the leveling phase of the a slight slope should be created, which will help the water not to stagnate. Obviously this slope should be oriented towards the side of the lawn more free than any walls in the house, flower beds or other.
To help the lawn to sprout in a hurry and spread all over the ground, while mixing the sand with the earth you can take advantage to add both a good quantity of peat (a substance of vegetable nature that brings organic matter and increases the structure of the soil ) that a small percentage of fertilizer. In this case the suggestion is to favor an organic fertilizer which, unlike the synthetic one, will not damage your soil in the medium and long term. Currently there are excellent organic fertilizers available on the market. For a prudent choice it is advisable to carefully read the manufacturer's information on the packaging and select a rich fertilizer of the three most important elements: nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus.
Combined and mixed together all the elements, you can proceed to the definitive leveling of the soil (without forgetting the slight slope), using the rake.
The land is now ready. For a good sowing you will have to "rest" for at least three weeks, so that all the natural elements fit in the best way. Do not step on it for any reason and instead pay attention to any infesting plants, which must be removed immediately.
Sowing: choice of grass species and final processing
After the "right" rest of the land, you can finally proceed with sowing. To avoid the risk of choosing a lawn essence that does not fit our soil or that grows too slowly, an opportunity to evaluate can be that of a mixed sowing, using different types of seed together. You can choose from within the large family of grasses, which has over 7500 different species types. The most well-known and suitable for our climate are the Festuca, the English Loietto (the one of the tennis courts of the "mythical" Wimbledon), the Cynodon Dactylon, the Paspalum and the Zoysia Tenuifolia. The first three are part of the microtherm category (more suitable for temperatures between 10 ° C and 20 ° C) while the last two belong to the macroterms (ideal for areas with temperatures ranging between 23 ° C and 34 ° C).
The combination of different species makes it possible to optimize the merits of each individual essence and to overcome any problems deriving from certain factors: the type of terrain available, the presence or absence of shaded areas, the intended use of the lawn (for example, if it is only for ornamental use or instead it will be trampled periodically as a place of play for children).
Once you have made your choice, it is time to move on to actual sowing, following the instructions on the package for the amount to be used. There are two most widespread methods: the one defined in broadcaster (ie manually, mixing the seeds with a small amount of sand) or through the crop spreader trolley, which guarantees a more uniform diffusion. Once the soil has been carefully sown, the last operation to be carried out remains: the passage of a roller on the entire ground (also in this case it is possible to rent it at a stocked garden center) to bury the seeds well.
Our work is finished. All that remains is to water "rain" very frequently and wait. Time a few weeks and on your ground the first green threads will start to appear. It will only be the beginning of a turf that everyone will envy you.
