MINT: GENERAL FEATURES AND USE
There are about 600 varieties of mint, among which the most widespread is peppermint.
The genus Mentha is native to Europe and the first cultivation of these plants dates back to 1750 in the county of Mitcham, in England. It soon spread to North America, Asia and Australia, while today it is widespread globally, although it is rarely cultivated in tropical climate countries.
Not many people know that, compared to other types of mint, peppermint has the highest menthol content and is still used quite often in naturopathy.
Used for centuries for its aromatic properties, it is good to know that this plant also has not negligible medicinal properties. Even cosmetic use should not be underestimated: a simple one mint infusion piperita has astringent and refreshing properties, excellent for giving relief to irritated skin. Excellent even after spending an intense day outdoors: just add the infusion to the water to enjoy a decongestant and refreshing bath.
Cultivating mint plants is not difficult and the leaves can be harvested and used throughout the year. However, it should be emphasized that the leaves collected in full bloom have a higher content of menthol and essential oils.
BENEFICIAL AND CURRENT PROPERTIES OF THE MINT DECOCT
The beneficial and healing properties of mint have been known for centuries, so much so that in 100 BC it was used by the Egyptians and later by the Romans.
Mint decoctions are ideal for solving digestive problems, thanks to mint's ability to stimulate the production of gastric juices. In fact, the plant has calming and anti-inflammatory properties that act on the stomach, alleviating swelling and acting against cases of dysentery. Drunk in small sips, the mint decoction it can be a valid help against nausea and vomiting, both during pregnancy and while traveling.
It is the high quantity of essential oil contained in the plant that protects the gastric mucous membranes, in addition to stimulating the production of bile, useful especially in the case of gallstones.
The tannins contained in the mint also perform a disinfectant and antispasmodic function, capable of benefiting an inflamed or simply irritated intestine.
In general, to treat the disorders typical of the gastro-intestinal tract, just drink a cup of infusion before or after meals. The preparation is simple and immediate: it will suffice to boil some dried mint leaves in the water, cooking on a very low flame. Once ready (generally after about 15 minutes), the decoction can be consumed without adding more juices or sweeteners. However, if the decoction is too bitter, you can add honey or cane sugar to taste.
Drink a cup of coffee every day mint decoction it is useful to fight bad breath or in case of amenorrhea (absence or delay of menstruation). Just prepare the decoction with 5 gr. of the plant in a cup of boiling water.
The mint decoction is widespread especially in Brazil, especially to combat cases of flatulence or indigestion thanks to tannins, capable of slowing down the proliferation of putrefactive bacteria. Even anxiety can be alleviated thanks to mint decoctions, a fact also confirmed by numerous scientists. The decoction can develop the same effects as the most common analgesics on the market and, unlike the latter, there is no danger of side effects. The therapeutic effects of a cup of mint decoction are therefore comparable to those of a normal aspirin.
Pouring a few drops of mint essence into a cup of sweetened boiling water can also combat cardiac neurosis. Alternatively we can pour a few drops of essence on a sugar cube to melt in the mouth.
Inappetence, asthma or cough can finally be alleviated by drinking at least three cups a day of infusion prepared with 15 gr. of mint leaves and flowers, dissolved in at least half a liter of boiling water.
Mint decoction: A USEFUL REMEDY ESPECIALLY FOR WOMEN
Numerous studies have shown the effectiveness of the mint and mint decoction in general in the prevention of female disorders.
According to some Turkish researchers, consuming decoctions of peppermint would serve to reduce the excess of hair on the female body, but not only. The decoctions consumed twice a day would also reduce the levels of male hormones in the female body, rebalancing hormonal imbalances.
Hormonal imbalances and ovarian problems are only treated with drugs, but mint decoctions have been shown to reduce blood testosterone levels, increasing female ones.
The research, carried out at the Suleyman Demiel University, is still ongoing but the beneficial effect of mint is now proven to combat the lighter symptoms. Once again it was possible to reaffirm the beneficial effects of plants with respect to drugs, especially in the treatment of disorders such as hormonal imbalances.
