Climbing Honeysuckle

The term honeysuckle refers to the species of Halliana and Chinensis which are plants that are part of the Lonicera japonica and grow in Japan, China and Korea. The climbing honeysuckle is highly sought after because it is a luxuriant and robust climber that has the gift of twisting itself on a support and is equal to a liana with very rapid growth. It can reach four five meters in height and produces fragrant flowers that reach the pinnacle of beauty in October, also due to the emerald green color of the leaves. This ornamental plant is so beautiful and spontaneous, it is widely cultivated especially in villas and gardens where it is desired to make an ornamental decoration but not only on support grids and trellises but also on trees with a not perfectly aesthetic trunk or on pergolas or arches that have to embellish a entrance. Unfortunately this plant cannot be combined with other plants because it is so bursting that it threatens to suffocate any species of plant approaching it. The only way to make him stay in the company of other plants is to plant low plants at his feet that can only serve as a further ornament but must not climb. Such plants as the clematis, and climbing hydrangeas, have a small development and will decorate only the base of the plant, without suffering dangers.

Honeysuckles are not demanding but demand constant watering especially if they are young specimens that want to take root in the earth perfectly. When the plant has very dry soil, it can take up to 20 liters of water to restore it. The fertilizer should be put as soon as the plant begins to bloom to make it even more beautiful and flourishing. The plant usually does not fear pests but if we do not constantly water it, with dry land it is possible that it has an invasion of fungi that attack the leaves making them crumple and it is possible that on the honeysuckle a whitish patina similar to a veil is formed. We should then use the same products that are used for rose bushes taking care every 10 days and if the plant is attacked by lice, you will have to resort to a powerful insecticide. The plant does not require any pruning, if we want we can cut the branches too long when necessary.Phytotherapy

The leaves and flowers of the plant are used in herbal medicine because they contain glucosides. Both the flowers and the leaves are collected late in the morning when they are no longer wet with dew and far from inhabited areas where flowers and leaves could easily have been contaminated by atmospheric agents and smog from factories. The flowers should be dried on racks kept in a ventilated place and turned continuously. With about three grams of dried flowers, prepare a tea for cough and with 50 grams of dried leaves, you can prepare a decoction to make gargles and give relief to the mouth sore or sore throat.

Pruning

The climbing honeysuckle It is a very vigorous plant that can also grow a lot over the course of a year. If the plant finds the ideal conditions in fact it manages to make remarkable growths, even of 4-5 meters in the same year. It is therefore clear that such a growth, within a garden or on the wall of a house must necessarily be contained with interventions if you do not want to be submerged by the green of honeysuckle in a few years. Here then is that pruning becomes an indispensable intervention to which it is worth devoting a little attention if you want to cultivate the plant correctly. Pruning must be more than anything else containment and must go to reduce the size of the climbing plant. A type of pruning that is practiced, especially for those climbing plants that must not exceed a height of more than 2-3 meters, is pruning at 10-20 centimeters from the ground which is usually done in late winter. In these cases the plant will take at least two years to reform complex and large branches.

Honeysuckle flower

The Honeysuckle is one of the most appreciated climbing plants because of its splendid flower. In fact, the flower, besides being colorful and aesthetically beautiful, is also present in a series of different colors, all very beautiful and valid from an ornamental point of view.
The flower blossoms between the end of summer and the beginning of autumn depending on the area and, besides being beautiful, it also gives off a good smell. We must therefore do everything possible, in the cultivation of the plant, to have beautiful flowers with scented blooms that last a long time. Fertilization is one of the fundamental cultivations to have abundant and fragrant flowers. Fertilization must be carried out with the right methods and quantities without exceeding the organic substance. Fertilizing the honeysuckle is important to enrich the soil with new organic substance and give new resources for plant growth. Fertilization is an operation that must be carried out in a more important manner at the beginning of the vegetative season, at the end of winter. This first intervention is also the most substantial and serves to ensure the soil, and therefore also the plant, all the nutrients it needs. Other fertilizing operations can then be carried out during the spring and summer months every 40-50 days to support the plant in its vegetative activity and in its flowering.
