The flowers in pots

Flowers in a garden or on a balcony determine the beauty of an open space. These represent an essential decorative element to make the green point of the house pleasant. Choosing the right container in which to place the flowers can not only enhance the value of the flower and its beauty but can also influence its life cycle. The nature of the soil, the basis for the plant's sustenance, can be easily influenced by a vessel whose material has characteristics that do not suit its chemical composition. However, choosing the right material goes hand in hand with choosing a vase suited to the aesthetic and morphological properties of the flower. An overly lavish vase could in fact obscure the beauty of an elegant and delicate flower like the calla, as well as a too cheap vase could diminish the energy that a flower like the tulip can release. Choosing the right vase is therefore as important as choosing the right flower to place in a closed or open environment. Knowing the materials related to the vases and the types of these represent the basis to avoid making unforgivable mistakes in the floral decoration of the house!

The materials of the vessels

As mentioned in the previous paragraph, the material of which the vessel is made plays a primary function in rendering the soil and the vital environment of the healthy and well-preserved flower. The topsoil is composed mainly of organic materials that need water and air, the choice of a resistant but at the same time breathable material is fundamental above all in relation to the needs of the flowers that we have put in vase. Each type of flower, as we know, requires different care, just think of the substantial difference between a flower like a rose and a small cactus. For this reason, the material of the vase must be chosen according to the flower and the characteristics it presents. The most common vases are certainly those in terracotta. It is a resistant material from the mechanical point of view thanks to the presence of iron oxide, a substance that determines its typical ocher-reddish color. Terracotta is a material that reacts positively with the ground. Its porosity makes it capable of absorbing the water contained in the soil as if it were a sponge, thus keeping the base compound of the flower hydrated and aerated. The water exchange in this case will be faster than for a plastic pot, so it must be taken into account that the plants will have to be watered more frequently. The ability to retain moisture in this material makes it particularly performing in the summer, when the sun tends to evaporate the water from the pot very quickly. Again thanks to the sponginess of the material, the terracotta vase tends not to overheat excessively, this because the water penetrated into its fibers carries out a sort of thermoregulating action. The temperature factor is by no means to be underestimated, above all to prevent the plant from drying out and the roots from becoming atrophied. A more expensive and certainly more luxurious variant of terracotta is porcelain. This is composed of kaolin, silica and fedelspato and its white color sets it apart from simple ceramic vases. The value of a porcelain vase often accompanies the refinement of rose flowering plants. Obviously if the clay pot is more recommended for an outdoor environment, such as a garden or a terrace, the porcelain vase must strictly be placed inside a home, in a protected place.
Cement is another material used for the construction of vessels. A concrete vase or flower vase has very different properties compared to ceramic. Not being porous, cement is a material that does not allow soil to "breathe" as much moisture as an earthenware pot. For this reason, cement vases are not recommended for flowers that need an always moist basic environment. In fact, in summer the cement tends to overheat excessively, transmitting a too high temperature to the flowering plant, which in many cases can react negatively. The cement vase, normally not very ornate and more basic, is however suitable for rustic half-open spaces where the freshness of a shadow or protection from the scorching sun is guaranteed.
The third and last material used for the construction of the vessels is plastic. Despite the lower economic value and therefore the greater economy, this can be considered a winning material in terms of practicality and unbreakability. The plastic resists impacts well, has very original color varieties and is well suited to the nature of the soil. Even in this case, maintaining the temperature inside the vessel can be a problem. In fact, the plastic may overheat too much in the summer and cool down considerably in the winter. For this reason it is good to pay attention to flower irrigation if the plastic vase is used in the summer. The plastic vase, as one can easily guess, does not have the breathable capabilities of a porous terracotta pot. For this reason the water of the earth is retained without being absorbed by the material. An extremely positive element for the plastic pot is certainly the ductility and the not excessive weight. Carrying a plastic vase is in fact much easier to carry than carrying a large earthenware or cement vase. This can be convenient especially at the change of season when the plants are moved from an internal environment to an external one or vice versa.

Flower pots: The aesthetics of the vases

The vases have been a decorative element since ancient times. Many vases of Greek age are today received intact seeds and have always inspired the master potters of each generation. For what concern flowerpot surely the most common form is the cylindrical one. This of course if we talk about flowers with long stems like sunflowers. An equally common form is the amphora. Based on the various dimensions of these vase creations we can choose a different type of flowering plant. Amphoras are also used for compositions of different flowers in the same container, a great idea to decorate both an interior and an exterior. Amphorae are mostly terracotta, ceramic or porcelain, which is why they are ornamental elements used largely in protected environments. The vase can also be transformed into a rectangular container. This for the short stem flower compositions and for the various assortments of succulent plants.
