Hand cream
The hands like the face are the part of the body most exposed to external aggressions. Cold, wind, sun, frequent washing and the use of household cleaners damage them. And their skin is more vulnerable to these attacks and becomes particularly fragile as it no longer possesses the natural protective layer on the surface. Over time, the skin becomes dehydrated and loses its normal softness and elasticity. Often the simple use of gloves is not enough to counteract the action of external agents that can sometimes even cause cuts and cracks. In any case, even in the absence of specific problems, the skin of the hands must be treated every day, protected and adequately nourished to prevent small traumas and signs of premature aging. The skin of the hands is very thin and contains fewer sebaceous glands (which secrete fat) than the other parts of the body. This explains the fragility and the tendency to spoil easily and to avoid this happening, it is necessary to resort to moisturizing and protective creams which act thanks to active, emollient and elasticizing principles. These are targeted components that, when properly mixed together, prove to be effective in stimulating the natural process of skin regeneration to create a barrier to defend external agents, to nourish and restore softness. These small annoyances can quickly get worse and if we do not intervene with proper care, they risk becoming chronic. Therefore, the treatment is based on specific creams for each single problem.
CREAM FOR DRIED HANDS
A good moisturizing and nourishing hand cream may be sufficient if the skin is not damaged. However, in case of irritation and cracking the hands need adequate protection. Most cosmetic brands offer special hand creams. These are mainly composed of water and fat (which are emulsions), which support and enhance the natural hydration mechanisms. The more the skin is dry the more the cream must be oily. Although the base is always the same, each producer has its own composition formula in which it adds vitamins, oily substances (Vaseline, mineral oil, paraffin, animal oil, vegetable oil, etc.), nutrients (glycerin) and above all a high factor protective against UVA rays. These naturally occurring substances in the stratum corneum have a strong affinity with water and therefore contribute to solving the problem.
The consistency of the cream must be fluid enough to spread well and without leaving a greasy film on the skin that can be annoying and become sticky. Furthermore, the fragrance must be light, therefore, not too intense. This cream is applied on the back and the palms of the hands with a rotary massage and extends up to the wrist and on the fingers lasting at least a couple of minutes. To maintain good hydration and softness it is essential to apply the cream in the morning and in the evening. It is precisely the regularity of application that allows an effective defense against atmospheric agents. In cases of very dry skin the application must be carried out every time the hands are washed to avoid dispersing the active ingredients contained in it.
HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HANDS WITH THE CREAM
Our hands are continually tested because of housework, work activities, gardening, etc. To avoid damage to them, it is necessary to protect them in the best way. Here are a few steps to follow some rules.
1.Avoid washing your hands too often. Except in special cases, three or four washes a day are sufficient. Preferably use neutral soaps or better still those with a low saponin content. After each wash, the hands must be thoroughly dried.
2. Continued use of detergents can alter the natural protective layer of the skin. Therefore, avoid direct contact with these products by wearing rubber-coated cotton or vinyl gloves. However, if they are worn for a long time, they can cause skin flaking problems.
3. The cold slows down the flow of blood and damages the surface of the skin, therefore it is advisable to protect the hands with woolen gloves when the temperature drops considerably.
4. The sun is also the enemy of our hands. In fact, UV rays accelerate skin aging and promote the appearance of pigmented spots. Before leaving for a beach holiday, you must also protect your hands with sunscreen even on the back.
5. A particular care is to use a very greasy cream like the one based on Vaseline, to wear cotton gloves before going to bed.
Hand cream: HOW TO CHOOSE THE HAND CREAM
In recent years, cosmetics have produced highly effective products, solving more than 95% of hand-related problems. However the business of these companies that have now become multinationals often overlook some important details to protect those who use the product daily. For this reason, hand creams can be bought in their natural state in pharmacies or herbalists where highly biodegradable products are offered, well tolerated, without contraindications and equally effective at clearly competitive prices. Needless to say, the choice of a cream should not be generalized, but regardless of where we buy it, it is essential to contact a dermatologist who, once the problem has been identified, recommends the appropriate cream for our case.
