Already at the beginning of the 50's the use of mechanical means began which allowed their extraction from the quarries, in a regular and perfect way. For years, the blocks have been used for the construction of walls and their wide use, it also arrives in the gardens and in the courtyards of small and medium-sized villas to build low walls or to outline pathways. The consistency of the blocks is appreciated in the building field because they are very light as they contain lapilli. They are much lighter than usual bricks and find satisfaction in almost all building works.
They are very porous so their laying on the ground is facilitated because they take root immediately in the cement mortar. They are permeable and even if they absorb a certain degree of humidity, they release it over time into the environment. Compared to common perforated bricks, they insulate better and are difficult to let heat pass through them. They are very crumbly but they manage to hold the compression well. As stated above, the tuff blocks are very shapeable so if you want to use them as curbs, to fence in flower beds or to mark paths, you can safely chop them with a special saw for the tuff. The assembly of the blocks is done with mortar or lime which, given the porosity of the element, takes root immediately. The procedure is that which is carried out with all the other bricks and that is put a layer of lime with the trowel, of about two centimeters and is pressed. The assembly can also be carried out cold. However, the building materials stores sell lime already prepared in 25 kg bags which is ready immediately. The walls should be passed with a few coats of plaster but it would be advisable not to do it because the tuff must harden in contact with the air and if this does not happen, the construction is impaired. If you really need to plaster, it is better to do it after a certain period of adjustment. We have said that in time the tuff improves and in fact it is so unlike the other bricks that when they age, are really unsightly. For a long time, the tuff does not need any maintenance.
