Unfortunately being able to have a perfect lawn is very difficult indeed both the plant and the maintenance need different and demanding operations: the preparation of the land, the choice of the suitable seeds, the sowing performed with a particular technique and that very often must be repeated because the wind and the water easily carry the seeds away, the irrigation that must be carried out correctly taking into consideration the humidity of the soil, the climatic zone and the level of germination because it is enough to mistake the quantity of water or the intensity of the jet to ruin all the work. Consequently it is clear that the installation of a new lawn requires a lot of time and effort.
Should we therefore be discouraged and renounce to having a walkable green space where to converse, organize barbecues, let the children play? Not to mention that the lawn protects from erosion and generates coolness in the summer.
The solution exists and is also advantageous, especially for small or medium-sized gardens that require less money. This is the rolled lawn, also known as sod, which in recent times has been experiencing a resounding success, supplanting the lawn created with sowing.
The first operation consists in preparing the ground that will have to accommodate the turf.It is necessary to hoe for a depth of about 15 cm. and carefully remove all weeds and stones, then fertilize the soil to make the roots take root more easily. To compact and level the soil surface, the roller is then passed several times.Since the turf grows better on sandy soil, if the soil is clay it is advisable to add sand before placing the clods. To choose the type of lawn, just choose the one we like best at the producing company where we can already see the final effect, which is impossible with the method of sowing, but we must keep in mind that there are different types of lawn in relation to the climate zone of belonging. The types called "microtherm" are more suitable for cold areas, say up to 25 degrees, so for the north, the "macroterms" are instead indicated for the south because they grow well up to 30 degrees; These differences should be respected to obtain a satisfactory result. The strips of lawn must be laid next to each other by slightly overlapping and then finishing with a cutter at the end of the work. Once the application is completed, the roller is passed and immediately watered, continuing the watering once a day for the first eight days; in the summer period also several times a day.It is worth noting that, if you are unable to immediately plant the lawn, it must be unrolled and watered because the grass needs water and contact with the ground otherwise the grass could dry out. After about fifteen days the irrigation can be reduced and the first cutting of the lawn should be done using a very sharp lawn mower and, after a month, at the first fertilization that will have to be in the measure of 3 kg. for 100 square metersMaintenance
From this moment on, the lawn must be subjected to the same care that would be reserved for a lawn obtained from sowing.
The maintenance operations mainly involve a perfectly finished shaving. For this purpose it is essential to always keep the lawn mower efficient by cleaning it well from residual grass after use, periodically checking the engine but above all keeping the blades very sharp, even using the grinder every one or two months, depending on the extension of the area to be cut.
The lawn should always be mowed when the grass is dry and more frequently in periods of higher growth such as in the spring, a period in which it will be preferable to reserve this work in the afternoon to avoid morning dew.
The cut grass must be collected and then burned, work that can be avoided with the use of the latest generation lawn mowers called "mulching" which chop the grass and then release it onto the soil fertilizing it.
Another important operation is the aeration which consists in the removal of the felt, that is that layer of dead grasses which accumulate on the lawn and which when it reaches the thickness of more than two centimeters becomes the privileged humus for pathogenic germs since the felt hinders the normal passage of water, air and fertilizer. To remove it, use the "verticut", a special rake that cuts into the felt, without going too far down to preserve the roots, and raises it, allowing you to remove the dry grass. However, if the grassy soil became, due to trampling, heavy rain or for other reasons, it would be too hard and compact to use the "corer" or "chopper", special machines used to air the grassy soils by oxygenating the earth and making it again receptive.
Watering the lawn is essential but often problematic both for the time to be allocated to this occupation and for identifying the exact amount of water needed to obtain an optimal result. The best solution lies in the decision to place an irrigation system which not only saves a lot of time but spreads water evenly without leaving holes and both the amount of water and the time are programmable so that you can be absent from home without no thought.
Precisely in the case of the irrigation system, it is particularly useful to apply the lawn in rolls, in fact, having to renovate an existing lawn, it will obviously be inevitable to remove it in order to proceed with the excavation and planting works, therefore, at the end of the work, it will be easier applying strips of lawn in rolls instead of sowing in this way, within a couple of weeks, our lawn will be even more beautiful than before.
Of course all these works, even if supported by different tools and machines, require a certain commitment that, if it is too burdensome, can be delegated to specialized companies that will take care of everything, leaving us only the pleasure of enjoying a beautiful green lawn.
Given the speed of realization, this type of lawn is also used in a series of occasions that require very short times. Let's think, for example, of the playing fields, first and foremost the soccer field, but also to cover the surfaces of fair pavilions, or for any other event and event that then requires the immediate removal of the lawn.
