Green garden plants

Without the shrubs, every garden would be deprived of that balance which constitutes a technically and aesthetically indispensable component. It would be impossible to combine structurally imposing elements like trees, with the thin consistency of flowers and herbs. A garden without shrubs would appear bare and unbalanced. Shrubs, unlike trees, develop mostly in width rather than in height and their branching is thick and intertwined from the base of the stem. These plants can be generically divided into five broad categories: ground cover, dwarf, small, medium and large. From the twenty centimeters of height of the ground cover shrubs, with some species of the great ones it is possible to reach heights of six meters. The incredible variety of these plants provides us with a myriad of excellent solutions for every type of garden, large or small. It's about having an infinite palette of colors, shapes and movements with which to embellish and enhance any garden. The shrubs are certainly an inexhaustible source of inspiration for all lovers of gardening and beyond. Below we will pay particular attention to some shrubs with unique characteristics but which in common all have an Asian origin. They are plants that generally do not require particular attention but that do not adapt to cold climates, preferring mild temperatures and a humid, fresh and airy habitat.

Ground cover and dwarf shrubs

Aglaia odorata: it is a small green shrub native to central Asia that generally does not exceed one meter in height. They have a rather twisted and branched stem that becomes rough and chapped with age. The evergreen foliage that can be oval, spatula or pointed is dark but shiny. It produces small, very fragrant, yellow flowers that look like rice grains. Aralia japonica: it is a perennial shrub plant native to south-east Asia that normally does not exceed half a meter in height. It branches very close to the base of the stem. The large green and dark bipinnate leaves are palm-shaped. In autumn it produces small white or green flowers grouped in panicles. The berry-shaped fruits are dark purple.

Small and medium shrubs

Cotoneaster: it is a shrubby ground cover plant native to central Asia. Some of its specimens, however, even reach two meters in height. The branching is dense and compact. The small oval leaves are bright green and can be persistent or deciduous. In May it produces white flowers that in autumn become small spherical red or orange fruits. Skimmia japonica: is an evergreen shrub originating in Japan that hardly exceeds one meter in height. The dense, harmonious and roundish ramification can expand up to reach two meters in diameter. The foliage is dark green in color, has an oval shape and is of a leathery consistency. The flowers grouped in panicle are white or cream and in autumn they are preceded by reddish buds. Rhododendron: native to central Asia, it is an evergreen shrub that generally reaches one hundred and fifty centimeters in height. The robust branching is tortuous and thick. The small elliptical and leathery leaves are dark green with a folded edge. Flowering requires cold temperatures and low light. The purple flowers are grouped in bunches on a five-lobed chalice and smell of resin. The small fruits have an oval shape. Aucuba japonica: it is a small evergreen shrub originating in Japan that can easily reach two meters in height. The stem and the very thick branches have a bright green color, as do the leaves, large and elongated spear-shaped, which are generally variegated with white. Their vegetation is thick. In spring it produces small panicles of brown-colored flowers which in autumn bear red berries that remain on the plant for several months. Euonymus japonicus: is a plant of Japanese origin that can reach two meters in height. Keeps the leaf in winter. They develop a compact shrub with a rounded shape that is widely used as a hedge. The foliage has a green spotted and variegated yellow or cream color. In spring it produces small white or greenish flowers and in autumn long, dark or pink berries. Ligustrum japonicum: it is an evergreen shrub or tree of Japanese origin that reaches heights varying from two to five meters. It branches from the base with a rounded shape. The dense foliage is green, shiny and of medium size. Summer flowering is shown in white clusters. The fruits are small oval drupes of a purple to black color. Hydrangea: plant of the Hydrangeaceae family includes some shrub and climbing species originating in East Asia that hardly exceed one hundred and fifty centimeters. The woody stem is particularly robust. The lobed leaves have a toothed margin, pointed apex and are green-yellowish in color. The spherical-shaped inflorescences can take on different shades of color in addition to white with shades ranging from pink to red, from blue to violet.

Large shrubs

Pittosporum tobira: is an evergreen shrub native to East Asia that reaches heights ranging from two to five meters. The bushy branching makes it suitable for the formation of hedges. The oval and shiny leaves are dark green. The white or cream flowers smell of vanilla, are grouped in bunches and bloom from April to September. Prunus laurocerasus: originating from Asia Minor, it is a bushy green shrub that when cultivated as an umbrella can reach seven meters in height. The smooth stem in juvenile age can be straight or contorted with greyish branches which start from the base and which, as they age, darken and coarsen. The vigorous plant has dark green leaves, generally elliptical in shape, with a pointed apex, a toothed margin and an average length of 12 cm. In spring it produces white panicle flowers. The red berry fruits turn black as they mature. Laurel: it is a bushy and perennial shrub originating in Asia Minor. In ideal conditions it can take the form of a tree and reach a height of ten meters. The stem is generally smooth and blackish with thin and thick branches. The leaves with a wavy border are dark green on the upper part and a lighter and more yellowish green on the lower part. The light yellow flowers are clustered together and bloom in spring. It produces berry-shaped aromatic fruits in early autumn.
