Dear Mary,
the fertilizer can be supplied mixed with the water of the waterings, or it spreads on the ground, in the form of small hard granules, which should melt over the course of the months, or it is still mixed with the manure (or the earthworm humus or compost) to the earth in the vases or in the flowerbeds. In the first case, the fertilizer to be dissolved in water is specifically formulated to supply ready-to-use mineral salts to the plants, which absorb them almost completely immediately, as soon as you supply them with watering; small amounts remain briefly in the soil, and will be absorbed with the subsequent watering. As for the slow release granular fertilizer, it remains in the soil for about 3-4 months, dissolving with each watering. The manure, on the other hand, slowly decomposes, providing the soil with fertilizers generally rich in nitrogen, which remain available to the plant for some months. Regardless of the fertilizer you have chosen, the waterings are not affected at all, and therefore you will have to continue to water as always, also because the roots of the plants generally absorb the mineral salts dissolved in the water, and not in solid form. So, if for some reason, after fertilizing, you stop watering, your plants will not be able to absorb the mineral salts you provided with the fertilizer. Clear that, part of the more soluble salts will be washed away from the soil through your watering, but generally the fertilizers to be used in the garden in the pots are formulated taking into account that part of the salts contained in them will not reach the plants, but will be washed away. In any case, in general, the correct use of fertilizers avoids the spread of large quantities of nitrogen in the soil (and therefore in the aquifers), since these are usually salts easily absorbed by the roots, which therefore, already in the moment of the first administration, they absorb most of it.
